Advance was out, all they had left was a 5 incher. So i'll probably just do the ebay one and give the other to my buddy for his xs400.

I am also interested in doing the headlight conversation on my bike. How is it done and what do I need to do it?

RangerG, I wish I'd seen that 2 days ago.

Another option (which is what I did) is a H6024 sealed beam Halogen. WalMart has them for $9.

Lots of screws to remove to get bulb in and out though, so that would be a big advantage if you had to change an H4 on the road.

Okay, just remember (for those who are in states that require a safety inspection) that "E" code headlights are NOT d.o.t. approved and not legal for street use.

Also, if you choose to use a 100W bulb, I cannot stress the importance of adding a high-beam (really, both lo and high beam) relays within the headlight circuit. The stock tiny gauge wiring and headlight switch components are not designed to take the extra current, and you run a real risk of burning up just some wires (especially within the enclosed headlight housing), or maybe burning up your entire main harness (ouch! what a bummer THAT is to replace). or, if it's not your day, burning up the entire bike.

Also, make sure your alternator etc. is in tippy-top shape, because the somewhat small alternators on these bikes put out a MAX of 19A, and that's at 4500+ rpms, and a 100W bulb eats up about 8.5 amps all by its lonesome.

I didn't know about "E" code headlights. Good thing we don't do safety inspections here. I'll be staying with the standard 60/55W bulb. I'm saving the spare amps to run the electric vest I'm buying at the end of the month. 8)

E code headlights (European style) ARE legal for street use in Canada, and also in the US -IF- they also have the DOT marking.

Nearly all modern cars & trucks now, foreign & domestic, are produced with E code headlamps whether they're marked that way or not -- that's the light pattern they put out.

I've switched to one in my bike - takes a bit of getting used to, but so far I love it.

As for the bulb, go with a stock wattage GE Nighthawk if you can find it; and failing that find a Philips Vision Plus (pink & black package).

Just get the headlight, and order an h-3 bulb insert. You will be fine. They fit in the exact same. H4 just draws more.

On my bike, I have a regular h-7 low beam 55w bulb, and 9005 high beam 100w bulb, and without the bike running, the high beam works fine. No excess heat or anything. Doesn't draw any harder than normal 55/60w.

The headlights you get on ebay aren't sealed beam, so you have that flexibility. I have a set of projector square lights in my pickup, and they replace my sealed beam. All youhave to do is just plug in h-3 bulbs into the socket on the back of the headlight.

So, is there a specific number that the H4 bulbs are? for example like 9007 is the bulb type for my car. If that is the case I may be able to still get the bulb I want.

I finally installed the H4 Halogen headlight tonight. I was worried that I may have purchased a headlight that could have been made for a right hand drive country, but it's built for our market. Attached photos of the 27 year old sealed beam and the new H4, both on low beam. The old pattern is quite a bit wider. Once I get out for a ride at night I'll let you know what I think of it. I didn't really notice much difference as far a how bright the lights were.

    This is the old light.
