So I've been planning this carb tear down for a while now despite the fact that the closest I've really ever come to a carb is playing with the throttle and choke on a car. Have nearly 30 pages of info printed off of these discussion boards as well as the Haynes manual. Following Rick's old school carb cleaning guide. Carbs came out like cake. Then the problems began...

    Took off the float bowls.

Problem 1: Float valve assemblies on carbs 1,3, and 4 came off fine, but someone had already rounded off the brass on carb 2. Can't even get a small pair of vice grips to grab it and get it to turn now. What do I do?

Problem 2: When removing float valve assembly on carb 3 ratchet hit one of the posts that the hinge pin slides through when valve broke loose, snapping off the post. Didn't take much to break that. What do I do?

Problem 3: Main jets 110s. Smaller jets..whatever they're called 40s. Had to use vice grips to get a couple of the smaller jets out as the brass was messed up on top, but they all came out. Had to use vice grips to break a couple of the main jets loose, however on carbs 2,3, and 4 the main jets are now just spinning in place without unscrewing. What do I do?

At this point I think I'm holding off on tearing down the carbs anymore than I already have. What is everyones recommendations? Riding season is here now and I feel like I'm gonna be screwed. I'd like to hear from you guys. Got any advice Rick? Or should I just spend the money and send them to you?

    1 - screw extractor

2 - Some people have epoxied. You can replace that carb. I've never done it but I wonder if one of those home brazing rods for aluminum would work. Also the option of having it professionally welded. I personally would worry that the epoxy would give out at an inconvenient time.

Lesson folks - use an extension when working. Can save fingers and other things.

3 - Those jets screw into the emulsion tubes which protrude up into the throat of the carburetor. Usually they're gummed in, your bad luck. If you pull the slides you can look down at them. Maybe finger pressure will hold them. Careful of tools as the interior and tops of those are precision machined.

    Good luck!

1-So if I use a screw extractor to get that out, I assume I'll have to be finding a replacement to buy somewhere?

2-Unfortunately I actually was using an extension..but those things were in pretty tight (one still isn't loose) and when that one broke loose the socket slipped off and that's actually what hit the post and broke it.

3-I'm assuming what you're talking about is tearing apart the top ends and attempting to hold whatever jets screw into with finger pressure?

I would seriously consider buying the set of carbs. (As long as they are in good shape. THis will allow you to a) use one of the sets for practice cleaning and taking the carbs apart, and b) have some sometimes hard to find spare parts.

Welding that cast post back on would be very tricky. There may be someone who can do it, but they would have to be good.

My question with buying that other set of carbs is that..will I have any better luck with it? I'm just about to the point of sending my carbs off to Rick if he's still taking them, but with that broken post and what not I'm not sure what he can do.

A couple of my main jets also started to spin the emulsion tube, but they had broken loose. Try pulling up on them when turning them. One I only needed to use my fingers. The other was already muffed up so I used needle nose vice grips and pulled up on them when turning. Must have put enough pressure on the tube to hold it in place allowing me to get them out.

I think you're only real issue is the broken pillar. The jets are available on line for $3-$12 depending where you order from. I'm sure Chacal has some good used or new ones available as well.

If you don't want to replace the broken carb with another, I'd give a good epoxy a try. That pillar doenst have much of a load on it and epoxy's are used all the time to shape transfer ports on two stroke motors so being submerged in fuel should not be an issue.

Is the whole Post broke-off or just the Hinge hole part?

With all the "Parts Carbs" there are available ... I recommend replacing that one Body with the broken Hinge Pillar with a Carb Body from a set of "Parts Carbs"

The BODY is Cast Aluminum. Clean-up that Parts Carb Body after stripping it Clean ... and use your Jets and other guts to build it!

I'll be accepting Carbs for Cleaning and repairs after Easter!

Good to hear from you Rick! The post is broke off at it's base at the level where the float valve assembly bolts in. May I ask your recommendations on removal of the parts I currently can't get removed? I may end up buying that other set of carbs...and then sending both sets to you, because I really don't know what to do at the moment.

For what it would cost to send that body out and have a new Hinge Pillar Post affixed to that Carb Body ... you can easily get a set of Parts Carbs and we can substitute the Body without a broken Pillar for the one that's damaged.

You can repair a Hinge Hole easy enough. But trying to stick together the Pillar with any adhesive is a waste of time and money.
The Hinge Pin needs to be Level or the Float will stick.

Okay..so right now I'm looking at trying a little harder to get those main jets out tomorrow, and possibly ordering some new ones? Is my only choice for getting that float valve assembly out a screw extractor and ordering a new one? As far as the broken post, I'm looking at getting a replacement carb body.. So..what everybody is saying is that my best bet is to buy that set of carbs and use it for everything I need? Any difference in the '82 carbs from my 1980 set? And how much is too much to pay for them as they've already doubled in price since acergremlin posted that link earlier?

I'm opening the Shop on Monday.
    Try to relax until then.

I have some Carb Bodies that are set-aside for just such emergencies.
    Have a beer.
    Watch some NCAA Hoops.
    Take a break.

Look at it this way ... you CAN'T get hurt doing something dumb on your 21st Birthday that would be related to you riding that Yamaha.

Haha..very true. Funny how I've had my bike less than a year but everytime something happens and I can't ride it for whatever reason my mom always says there must be a reason. Would have gotten in a wreck or this and that... Could be. I'd still like to be riding my bike though..albeit without 21st birthday stupidity.
