Guys, I am considering selling my ride. It's a 1982 with just under 9,500 miles on it. Flawless paint & frame with a motor clean enough to eat off of. Any ideas as to what it is worth? I live in southern Ohio

More pictures of it can be seen in my gallery

    wow, 9800 miles in twenty-six years 8O
It's brand new, in my opinion.

What its worth over there, i dont know... Here in the Netherlands they'll give aprox. 1,000 - 1,500 euro's for such a beauty...

WOW, that's in nice shape for how old it is! You have a collectors item there. I suspect it would bring $2500 or better in that shape. I don't know what they sold for new. Maybe the right buyer would give $3000 if they were looking for a good one. Nice!!

Thanks guys it took alot of hard work but it really is as clean as the pictures show.

I had picked it up about 12 years ago from a guy who had bought it new, rode it one year and parked it next to his garage out in the weather for several years. Had less than 3000 miles on it when I bought it in 1996. I tore it all apart, cleaned every nut and bolt with a toothbrush and soaked the carbs for a week and repacked all of the bearings. The paint was shot so I had it repainted the Ford Mustang Laser Red Metallic.

The bike is truly amazing! As long as I keep the battery charged it will start right up any time of the year and runs as smooth as a new one.

The paint was a 3 stage process. The guy originally quoted me $300 but his material cost ended up being over $200 so my wife insisted I give him another $100 plus a gift certificate at a restraunt.

If you sell it at "market value" - (what the market will bear today) , you'll regret it ! Tuck it away carefully so you can enjoy it later. It'll only go up in value anyway.

So where is a good place to find the "Market Value" Ebay?

Trader publications--Auto trader has Cycle Trader in my area. Plan on a long listing at a high price and be patient, if you really want to sell, or sell it here, on XJBikes.

There's www.nadaguide.com It's like kelly blue book but it has bikes snowmobiles and other stuff. it's the one insurrance companies use. But it really doesn't take into account the collector value. It really depends what you want for the bike. and what other people are willing to pay. You could always put it on ebay set a reserve for what you want and see what happens.

I looked it up. Nadaguide says it's worth $2200 in excellent shape and $1300 in good shape. I think I would still ask a little more then that if it was mine. You can always come down in price if you want.

Guys, I have been watching Travis' 650 on e-bay and am wondering if the standard XJ's bring more than the Seca's. Anyone know??

That statement is not entirely true. Most claims adjusters use assorted valuations depending on companies and circumstances. Some even use multiple information sources.

I thought the Seca cost more new...and my math wuld make it worth more now :?

Although the value depends on the overall condition of the Bike ... I'd say the numbers for NADA and other price-quoters are low.

With the energy prices on the rise ... Motorcycles are more valuable to people in sheer costs of energy cost savings.

THAT has to interpret in a higher value for a clean, running bike in good condition!

I put my bike (81 seca 550) for sale localy (lubbock tx) and in one week i had 6 offers the highest being 2200. and that with 16k miles on it and not as near as a good condition yours is. the 750 secas are hard to find in my neck of the woods, even the 550's are. I would hang on to it, prep it for storage and protect that bike!!!

The Nada book value guide is kinda confusing. First you must go to the motorcycle part and then click on the Antique bike part to find the value for the older bikes. It does list the Seca for 2200 and the Maxim for 1675.00
retail if in excellent condition. :D

Every owner who did their own maintenance to improve their bike and contribute to its overall good condition and healthy engine state deserves to get more for the bike than the NADA quote for a showroom stock bike that got soaped and watered regularly.

I'd rather have someones bike who did regular Oil Changes than somebody who was good about just keeping it clean.
