    Good evening all,

Last Saturday morning I went out to work on my wonderful little XJ650J. The first thing that happened was that the fuel selector that wasn't supposed to allow fuel to flow when the engine was off brilliantly allowed fuel to flow. This is the result. No more motorcycles for me. I put a lot of effort and money in this project and I'm really sick about this. I really recommend getting rid of the stock fuel selector and putting a standard selector with "on", "off", and "reserve" in its place.

Now I've got a lot of new parts and tools to get rid of but I really don't want to look at them yet. This just sickens me.

    Cheers,

    Phil

My condolences. I hope no one was physically injured. I know emotionally and financially it's going to take a while to get over this. Just don't let it put you off riding permanently.

Wow! That REALLY sucks. I hope you're okay. With all the damage to the car and bike, I'm surprised it didn't burn the roof off the garage.

Holy crap Phil. Thats for sure a bad event. I sure hope your insurance and all is up to date. Will still be a pain for sure to get things back in order and all but financially you'll eventually be square.

Do know what the ignition source was?

That is just wrong. I feel your pain and you have my condolences.
Bikes, cars and buildings are replaceable. Lives on the other hand, are not. It's good to know everyone is OK.

Sorry for your loss Phil. I've had fuel system related car fires (5) where my engineering was "inadequate".

Could you take the time to explain what happened in more detail?
Almost all XJ ers are running the same factory tap, and re-building it seems to be more popular than replacing it. Also adding a cheap cut-off to a malfunctioning valve is done ( mine). Replacing with a new ON-OFF-RES seems to be an unpopular fix.

I don't mean to rub you the wrong way on this, just a better explanation may help prevent more fires.

first off, sorry for what happened and its good that no one was hurt. but i was wondering what exactly happened as well. i had a leaking petcock and replaced it with an exact oem replacement part. i also have an extra cutoff switch in place just in case.
