thats what i thought too, he ran the number on the tranny but that wasnt it, he said he has to wait to hear back from washington for whatever it is that was stolen and has no idea how long that will take and then depending on what part it is wheather i can just take it off and give it to him or that they may have to take the whole bike

Cars have VIN#s located all over the place, but even then, they don't search all the #s to mark a car street-worthy. Strange..

The numbers stamped on the engine case by the clutch cover partially "match" the bike's full VIN, as the engine number is the bike "(model number---3 positions) dash (6-digit sequential frame number)".

The full VIN is in the format (JYA)(model number---3 positions)(00)(a calculated---via a mathemtaical formula---single check digit or letter)(a letter designating the year of the bike)(A)(6 digit sequential frame number).

These two separate numbers will "match" as long as the original motor is in the original frame!

NOTE: on some very few models, the bikes 3-position "model number" is NOT the same as the 3-position FRAME ID number that is stamped on the right side of the steering tube neck.

The "sequential frame numbers" should always match between frame, VIN, and engine case as far as I know.

I'm not aware of ANY other part on these XJ bikes that has a "VIN" (full or partial) beside the frame (on the steering neck) and the engine top case. I suppose if we all searched hard enough we might find one somewhere else---perhaps the swingarm?---but I've never seen one!

Remember.... it aint over till it's over!!
    Things tend to work out.

So what if someone swaps an engine/tranny out on their bike? Serial #'s wont match then either.

cop probably had a bad day, noticed the vin numbers of the motor and frame didn't match, and 'assumed' you stole something.

or your engine's out of a stolen bike in washington. which would really suck!

    Good luck with it anyways

    Where are you from, anyways?

Listen, after seeing all the trouble actual XJ owners have sussing out their VINs, it wouldn't surprise me in the least to learn the guy checking your VIN submitted the wrong number(s). Get ready to appeal their determination if they decide you got stollen parts, 'cause they probably screwed something up. Besides, you're dealing with idiots at Washington State Patrol. A friend just had his vehicle inspected Monday. They gave him all kinds of grief. When it was all done, the lady inspector, a servant of the public, walks back to him, hands him his paperwork back and says--I kid you not-- "It was nice F'ing with you. Have a nice day." Incredible!

    Just an update.

I finally got the bike to pass vin inspection evidently what went on was a motor was stolen frome a guy and washington only listed thr first numbers of the vin of the bike, so anytime someone just runs the first 8 numbers for a vin its gonna come up stolen happens to be any yamaha 1981 xj650.

So after a huge pissing match with a detective they actually decided to run all the vin numbers and contact washington to find out what the deal was,

so after being threatened to be arrested for possesion of stolen property, it finaly worked out in my favor, helped that i have a mom in law who works for the judge in the naighboring county.

    so thats the scoop.

no, these guys aren't paid to protect, that's what we're told, what they are told, is they are the law and can do whatever they want with little or no aftermath.

I hate the police state we are in, any different than the 'terrorist' we're fighting? no, we still get raped by the people who are suppose to protect us, sometimes that rape is literal. and the cop goes free.

oh are you talking about the 24th of july? ya i suppose it might seem that way but that's just a utah holiday... we celebrate both one is just on a national level and one is on a state level... as for relating to church..... it doesn't really.

well where i live they still did it on a sunday so i guess i don't have an explanation for that. but either way if they moved it or not does the day really matter? i mean the 4th of july is celebrating americas independence... independence from a government they didn't agree with. they came here to have religious freedom and so i don't see the harm in exercising that freedom to worship on a certain day of the week. I can understand where your coming from because a ton of the stuff we do is weird... even to me but most of what you've heard probably isn't too accurate... i mean how much did you understand about your XJ before you came to this site? its kind of hard to know much about something til you really do your research, and don't get me wrong i'm not trying to make you change your mind because you know what thats your opinion and i respect that but i just wanted to open your eyes a bit if i could.

You guys just slay me! I LOVE this site! To each his own and, IMHO, he is better off for it. No disrespect to our lady members, how can one update an ages old euphemism? I 100% agree about learning about something before representing an opinion. Of course this doesn't stop me from having ingnorant views on a few things but I'm working on them.

4th of July.... My Grandmothers birthday was the only thing I ever celebrated on this day :)

Interesting how most of the western world knows this date as American Independance Day
