Have you tried an internet search or the Yamaha dealer?

Sounds like a very nice bike. Is it the air- or water-cooled 700? Post up a few pictures of it when you have a chance.

First place I look for parts is eBay. There's always lots of stuff on there for our bikes.

And welcome to the club. :)

I got a clutch cable from Chicago Cycle, a large new/used dealership. If they can get be parts (usually special order), I imagine someone near you can as well. eBay certainly is a good place to start.

Another idea would be to find the length of the cable. Aside from the length, I don't think there's much variance in throttle cables. They're essentially just a cable with a knob at each end. I would be surprised if you couldn't have one made at a reasonable price somewhere. Where to do that, I wouldn't know..

hmm yes i can get 1 made up,but they want to charge me £40,plus the plastic that bends up into the throttle cassing, has snapped, typical.

They have an xj700 section but no throttle cable, give them a ring they may know what will fit. I would have thought the standard xj650 cable would fit as they are all pretty standard.

Okay, Len... I gotta ask. What's the difference between the two? Other than the dollar, that is.

I have an 85' xj700 aircooled, had it 3 years now. Parts in the UK are almost non-existent even S/H on ebay though brake pads and seals for the forks seem to be plentiful. I have had to re-place a lot of parts and all came from either the states or Canada. Living in Spain dont help with the postage costs and I think mine is the only xj700 in the country.

I bought a new throttle cable from BikeBandit last year,I've bought parts from loads of places over there including Bikebandit, motogrid, serius. One problem is that a lot of firms over there are now refusing to post abroad.

I have a box of parts ( headlamp indicators sissybar etc) not much mechanical stuff though.

Try a better bike shop! In particular, find one that is used to old Brit iron, they're more likely to have the odds & sods in stock to make cables with.

The bike shop by me, last time I had one made, charged me a quid per nipple, plus a quid or two for the cable itself, and then let me loose with the soldering gun to put it all together.

Voila! a cable for less than a fiver.

Welcome to the forum yamahamaxim85! Not sure what the shipping fees are to the UK, but Chacal can certainly hook you up with nearly any part you may need!

But, I'm also curious about the difference (good eye MaximumX!) in the $20 and $21 throttle cable  And I can't remember the last time I spotted a non-X part costing more than an X part! 8O

Aftermarket X part vs. OEM non-X.

I'm sure the Yamaha OEM MaximX cable would cost you a healthy male child.

I always found BATS motorcycles in Biggin Hill to be a very good source of spares for imports - and not just for common bikes like XJs, but for the rarer stuff too.

Worth knowing about if you're over here.

i got a gear cable from a cycle shop $2.00 they are real long, you just have to sweat off the old nipples and solder them on the new cable.

If you bring the Throttle Cable to a reputable Bicycle Shop.

    That's right ... Bicycle Shop.

They have the Cable, Sheath, Shehath ends and Lead Bullets to MAKE you one for far less money than you will spend trying to get a used one or a new one from any source.

A good Bicycle Mechanic should be able to MAKE you that Throttle Cable in just a few minutes.

    Bring in ALL the Parts.
DON'T forget the right angle bender and the adjustment knurl.
They have everything you need to make a cable to replace the Throttle Cable at any well-stocked Bicycle Repair Shoppe!

    Bicycle.
