I pulled my master cylinder off to paint and noticed the rubber sleeve thing that surrounds the rod the brake lever pushes in has a rip in it, does it need to be replaced?

I believe the purpose of that sleeve is to keep the plunger dry,so it won't rust. I put a rebuild kit in a Honda master cylinder, and forgot to install that boot,er,uh sleeve,The end result was that the plunger rusted, the rust pits tore the master cylinder seal and created a brake fluid squirt gun.Perhaps another member can chime in with further insight.

That's a seal to keep the dirt out of the inside of the master cylinder. It does serve a purpose. You will more than likely have to get a re-biuld kit to get just the rubber as I don' think it's sold separately.

Yeh, same thing here with the rust on the plunger tearing up the seal on the '80 xj650 when I got it.

I didn't think you could get that rubber sleeve separate form the rebuild kit, can you ?

Ah, if there is rust on the plunger, you may need to rebuild it anyway?
Chacal may be able to help you. He has alot of parts for these bikes he will sell you. PD

You can get that part at BikeBandit.com I am ordering one for my 82 XJ650. Think it was $7.50 for that part alone.
