Do you mean "vanity" plates? As in custom license plates?

in Texas we have special plates for antique autos: cheaper rates, longer renewals, can even lower insurance. but not intended for daily vehicles. wife and I have em on our old 56 Chevy pickup. Don't know if they also have antique motorcyle plates.

be interesting to find out, though. Thanks for bringing up the idea!

when i was in the Air Force in oklahoma and bought my 550 maxim, i asked the guys i rode with what YICS meant on the side of my motor...

they (who many rode Yamahas as well) said "it means YIKES! i bought a yamaha"...

i got a vanity plate that said YKSMTR for YiKeSMoToR...

i plan on getting some when i plate the bikes tomorrow but im not going to tell what they are until i get them on the bike. dont want to take the chance of someone ELSE using them...

oh here in michigan those are historical vehicle plates...

dont apply if you use your vehicle for anything other than parades, shows and the like. technically you can NOT use that vehicle to drive to church because its nice one sunday and you think it would be fun to drive the model A across town...

ive never seen one for motorcycles...

They are called collector plates here too!
You are restricted to the amount of use, basically can't be your daily driver.

Here's a few things I found out about collector plates here in Texas.

    http://rts.texasonline.state.tx.us/NASA ... &pltid=181
    http://rts.texasonline.state.tx.us/NASA ... 10&pltid=3
*So basically you are buying a specialty license plate ($15+regular registration fee), you have the option of personalizing the plate for an extra $40

Recapping this for Texans like me, who rode to school on the "little bus"...
I can register my 81 Maxim either antique or classic. Antique plates cost less (right?) but limit my riding (though I'm enough scofflaw to chance that if I'm saving serious registration money).

Also avoids safety inspection, which is kinda so-so for me: I want my bike safe so keep it well maintained; it will always pass. Then again saving the annual fee doesn't bother me.

Classic doesn't save a dime, right? In fact costs more than normal? And what I get is kinda cool plates. Doesn't seem such a great deal to me. Wonder how either special registration affects insurance costs.

Am I understanding you correctly on this?

thanks a lot for the info.

As Nick stated, I looked into before mentioned plates also, and you can only ride a set amount of miles per year with them on (In Minnesota) I'll stick to what I have for now. PD

It's not old enough for Arizona. I'd have to wait another 20 years then pay extra to get them.

I believe in Texas they “issue” brand new plates that have antique or classic written on them. However if you have a set of old say 1981 Texas plates that you want to put on your 1981 vehicle you can register the old plates. You pay less because new plates are not issued to you and you can drive it daily. It is that way for automobiles and I would guess that it is that way with motorcycles. Inspection is still required. I would call before I gave up.

That's good information, thanks. I'll check into it.

Heck, I may even be able to do better than that and get a brand new "1981" plate created specially for my bike... several of the guys I used to ride with are now making license plates full time over in Huntsville.

The plates on my ZX6 say EARZ'S - but I don't have the XJ licensed yet.
