OK, Looks like I'm going to be dropping the engine and ripping it apart to fix the 2nd gear issue. Are there any issues I need to know about that wouldn;t be in the Haynes manual? And while I've got it apart, is thereanything else I should be fixing up at the same time?

While your in there, rebuilding the starter clutch wouldn't be a bad idea, they're prone to fail. So might as well get that too.

Do some checking to see if you need to remove the engine. I have XJ & XS 1100 and the gears can be removed without taking the engine out of the frame. I'm not sure but I think the 650 and 750 are similar to the 1100

I would also replace the starter chain guide while your at it!

I'm on my 2nd gear fix right now and when I took my baby apart I found shattered remnants of what appears to be stater chain guide... black plastic and thick.. here's to hopin it's not something much more serious.

It is most likely primary chain guide remnants. But rebuilding the starter clutch while in there is a good idea.
