I am only getting about 35 miles tops before my bike has to go to reserve(I know I burn about 1.25 gallons). I know I am getting terrible gas mileage because of a bad oil seal. I need to go about 50 miles without stopping for gas because there are no gas stations between west Texas towns. Will I make it 15 miles on reserve? :?

    35 miles???????

With mileage that terrible, I'd expect a huge puddle of gasoline underneath the bike! If no puddle is present, I'd probably try filling the tank a little more than half-full next time!

this sounds like a math question.
    I HATE MATH!

    you are going 35 miles with 1.25 gallons 8O About 28mpg 8O
    (Ride taller gears dude)
I have NO clue the size of a 650 tank, but 1.25 to reserve sounds stingey.

Take total tank volume, minus 1.25 = Gallons of fuel left
Gallons of fuel left Times 28 = Miles left before empty

man 35 miles, that not 60 kilometers, When I still had my 650 tank I could get 100-120 km without reserve, and another 20-30(never pushed it farther than that) on reserve. That seal problem is destroying your mileage, and if your only getting 35 miles on the main tank I would have to say no, you reserve is not going to get you 15 more miles

lol. TELL ME ABOUT IT. I'm just driving it for a few months hoping the #2 cylinder will clear up. I am running a plug that is 3 steps to hot so it will burn longer without fouling in all the oil. The only reason I am taking such a trip on this bike is because I am hoping that it will clear up. Also it needs new front fork seals. I'm in college in Lubbock and Its about 120 mile trip home to the tool shop where I can fix everything.

(I have family that lives about every 60 miles along the route so if it dies on the side of the road I can get a pickup.)

    A xj 650 has a 3.4 gallon tank with a .8 gallon reserve.

hrm, i dont' know about anything

but my turbo, gets 45mpg.. 3.4 plus .8 reserve.. reserve for me is just a different petcock setting.

    an idiot setting

but, on a full tank (4 gallons) i can do 125 miles before i worry. and usually do.

You may just need them. Start saving your pennies (I totally understand being broke in school), you will need to get some parts to make this bike reliable.

Our 650's tend to be around 50 mpg when they're running well - more if you're under 200 lbs. I am not, and have jetted my bike, and I still average between 45 and 50 mpg.

For those of use who use metric - the 650 is a 13 litre tank, with 10 litres main and a 3 litre reserve.

I get about 170km of mixed riding to the main tank, over 200 if I'm doing strictly highway.

Yep I was at about 170 on my XJ650H when I ran out of gas this morning. ...sigh

And being a Noob, I completely forgot about the Reserve. I saw plenty of gas, so I thought it was mechanical. So I abandoned it for the day. "Where?" you might ask. At a Gas station of course!

I've been getting about 110 miles before hitting reserve and going to up to 155 before running scared and filling it up!
My weekly driving I get 45-47 mpg combo driving and got my best mileage @ 51 mpg going to Calico last year on the highway doing an avg. 70 MPH.
