So I had a new rear tyre fitted yesterday and when the mechanic took the back wheel off he said "Hey there's a long spacer missing from the inside of the difff to the bearing on the inside of the rear wheel" (makes it fun to get the wheel off and back on because it sits inside the diff).

So I went to the Yamaha parts diagrams and looked for it but cannot see it in the parts diagrams.

Does anyone have a rear wheel off at the moment or some pictures from when you last had it off to confirm if this spacer is missing?

    Cheers

There aren't any long spacers except one inside the wheel between the bearings and he shouldn't have taken that one out while changing a tire.
Your mechanic is an idiot which is why you should always do the work yourself instead of relying on the 19 year old high school dropouts at the dealer or tire shop to do it.

I might gently point out that, while obviously not the subject matter expert, the wrench-monkey had the where-with-all to throw a flag up having seen a condition he believed to be incorrect. I'd be grateful he didn't ignore it and send the customer on their merry way.
Alive, I would print the breakdown out and have a long discussion with your wheel changer. It may be that he is ignorant of your "species" particulars and this would be a great time to educate the fellow that might have to lay hands on your machine again (however, let's hope not). Ignorance is curable!

    Hi All
getting concerned here, have dropped off two rear wheels, on from a turbo and one fron the 750 (the one that looks like the 900) and both have had long spacers in the diff casing, I'll post pics tomorrow of it, and they are not shown on the parts diagrams, so do I leave it out,or put it back in,

I had the same problem trying to find that spacer! (if it's the one I'm thinking of) I didn't know I was missing it until I went to torque the axel to specs. Without this spacer you will lock up the rear wheel, so I don't believe you were missing it in the first place!

It's shown on the rear wheel parts sheet - item #2 spacer 90560-17204-00
    for your 1983 XJ900RK

When I put my rear back together there was a long spacer left over in the rear wheel bag. I'll never forget it because it took forever to figure out where it came from. It dosn't seem like it belongs there because it fits kind of loosely, but I figured it out and it is there.

Thanks guys... Yamaha parts catalogue is offline at the moment so I can't look it up.
