I got my wifes bike, 1985 Maxim X, back from the shop (carbs rebuilt and tuned) and he told me that the petcock is leaking. He pulled it apart to see if it was in need of a rebuild, but he said something is broke and he said I need a new one. So can I just buy any petcock or are there only certan ones that will work?

Sorry to jump in, but I have the same question about mine on my XJ1100J. Anyone know if there is a good aftermarket replacement or if you have to buy OEM?

I have been looking the net and found that my X has a PN of 31A-24500-02-00 the cheapest OEM I found was 62.15 plus shipping. I want OEM because I have read that the universal ones you will need to turn fuel on when you ride ond off when not. Not a big deal for me but it is my wifes first bike and that would be one more thing for her to worry about.

I like Pingel petcocks, they are well made, don't have any rubber parts to go bad except an "O" ring, allow a lot of fuel to flow and nicely chromed since they are sold as replacements for Harleys. They are expensive but you can find deals on ebay. The stock ones didn't allow enough fuel to flow and I kept running out of gas while driving at high speed on the freeway. The Pingels have a hole nearly 1/4" in diameter straight down through them when open so there's nothing to impede the flow of fuel. I found that Pingel model 4111-AH4 for the Yamaha YZ-80 was a perfect fit on my XS1100 Midnight Special and 750 Seca and still clears the carbs. The 4111-AH4 model has On-Off-Reserve, an aluminum hex shaped body with 1/4"NPT threads and single outlet and includes the mounting bracket with holes spaced 34mm apart. It should fit most Yamahas as long as you get the proper sized mounting plate.
The slotted hole in the tank needs to be wider in the middle to allow the filter to go up through the hole but otherwise they bolt right on. I used a small sanding bit in my Dremel tool to cut out some material from the center of the hole. Take care with the 4111 petcock since the body and threads are aluminum and the threads are very delicate. Do not screw it into the aluminum mounting bracket without putting something on the threads to keep it from sticking (or some teflon tape or form-a-gasket sealant when you get ready to install it) because the aluminum will gall and tear out the threads when you try to unscrew it. Install the Pingels so the outlet is facing in towards the carbs but angled back towards the rear about 30 degrees so the outlet tubes will not hit the frame under the tank.

You didn't say where it was leaking from ...but, I took mine apart and cleaned it... it was leaking from the screws that go into the gas tank.. so i put some (thin layer) rtv seanlant as a gasket on the tank and just at the base of the screw head and let dry.. after it was dry, I then put it together and no leaks.. you can get used ones on ebay.. just type in "maxim petcock" they got them for a buy it now for $25.. I usually go to bikebandit.com and cross reference part numbers with other models and then buy from somewhere cheaper
