Ok I am wanting to take my left-hand crankcase cover off to inspect the cam chain. Do I have to drain the oil to do this??

The only place you're going to see the cam chain is at the top, under the valve cover.

Let me restate my first post. I need to turn the engine to adjust the cam chain tensioner. Easy fix for my rattle, rattle, rattle. but just want to know if I nned to drain the oil. I know I don;t HAVE to, but I would like to not have it run all over the floor.

There should be no oil under that cover, probably just dust. ;o)

If there is oil, then your crank case seal is bad.

I just found out mine was bad. I've been getting oil on my shifter lever and exhaust system on the left side. I pulled the cover, and found oil on the bottom of the cavity where the ignition pickup is.
