    so i got the cover off. not very easy access to the brushes. and why are they called brushes? they dont look anything like a brush. one is longer than the other. id say theyre about 9 and 10 or 11 mm from the tip to the mounting bracket. probably need new ones. how much do they cost and how much of a pain is it to replace them? as Rick guessed, im gonna need a new gasket as well. its stuck on the cover and pieces of it are peeling.
    happy holidays to all

    They're called brushes because they brush against the spiinning surface they're supplying electrical contact to. I suppose you could say they really rub on the surface, but I would feel kinda odd going to the parts store to ask for rubbers for my bike.

    i wouldnt mind buying replacement rubbers for the alternator. any other time ive had to buy rubbers it usually works out in my favor.

    From the face of the mounting plate - toward the rotor? If so, you've got a lot left. I think the wear indicator is at about 3 mm. Look for the lines scribed on them near the plate.

    The one that runs on the outer ring will wear faster. It does more "brushing" per revolution.

    Fonz, here are teh items you need:

    Alternator Parts:

    s7) Aftermarket Alternator Brush Set, matched pair of brushes with the metal holders and lead wires. Fits all XJ550/650/700/750/900/1100 models. NOTE: Alternator brushes should be replaced whenever they are less than 11mm in overall length. Factory brushes have "wear marks" (scribed lines) on the brush to indicate their wear limit; these aftermarket brushes do not have the scribed wear line and we suggest that you scribe a thin line in the brushes at the same 11mm distance (from their contact end).

    HCP215 Alternator Brushes with Holders set:
    $ 19.00 set

    t7) Aftermarket Alternator Brush Set, matched pair of brushes with lead wires only, no holders. The original brush lead wires will have to be cut or de-soldered from their holders, and the lead wires on these brushes re-soldered onto their respective holders.

    HCP216 Alternator Brushes without holders set:
    $ 14.00 set

    ec3) OEM Generator Cover-to-Block Gasket. A great idea to replace these anytime you remove the cover for periodic cleaning, testing, or brush replacement.

    HCP1056 OEM generator cover metal Gasket, fits all XJ550 models.
    $ 7.25

    HCP1057 OEM generator cover paper Gasket, fits all XJ650, XJ700, XJ750, and XJ900 models.
    $ 6.50

    HCP1059 OEM generator cover paper Gasket, fits all XJ1100 models.
    $ 10.50

    Does anybody know the, general, amp output of a xj700 generator at idle and at speed ~6000rpm? Or what it should be I'd like to check my output before I go pulling parts off....thanks!

    For 700 non-X models, the MAXIMUM AVAILABLE charging output should be as follows (all values are approximate):

    1000 rpms: 7.5A
    2000 rpms: 15.0A
    3000 rpms: 18.0A
    4000 rpms: 20.0A
    5000 rpms: 22.0A
    6000 rpms: 23.0A
    8000+ rpms: max about 25.0A

    For 700-X models, which had a much larger alternator assembly than the standard models, the specs are:

    1000 rpms: 6.5A
    2000 rpms: 15.0A
    3000 rpms: 20.0A
    4000 rpms: 23.0A
    5000 rpms: 25.0A
    6000 rpms: 25.5A
    8000+ rpms: max about 26.0A

    The charging VOLTAGE should be:

    14.2 - 14.8 Volts at about 2,000 rpms for 700 non-X models, and the same voltage for 700-X models, but at about 3,000 rpms.

    Just a quick note, really should have started a new topic for yourself. Welcome and I'm sure you will find the forum a great place for parts, advice, and to communicate about your bike. It also helps if you put information about the bike and your location in your signature.
