I decided to try doing ghost flames after seeing a video on the net on how to do it. I have painted cars and snowmobiles before but this is my first bike. I started out with a base coat of medium wedgewood blue, I then taped off the flames with the help of a friend (he designed them), and mixed up my pearls that I orderded from paint with pearl. the main flame is a green shimmer pearl, and the base and the tips are a shimmer silver pearl. All I did was mix the pearls in some clear coat and applied it to the bike with a air brush. I then finished off with 2 coats of clear. It turned out good but not perfect as I am not that good at body work so there are some dimples from rock chips that I missed and a few small dents that I didn't attempt to fix. Now my wife likes her new bike. You can see more pics here http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v305/ ... Maxim%20X/ the guest pass word is maximx. Let me know what you think.

That is sweet!! Very similar to what I had in mind for my Maxim X before the engine blew. Now I feel even worse.

thanks guys. I will have to get the pics of the whole process uploaded. I know not everyone has the tools at there disposal but if you have a air compressor, go out and buy a spray gun (dosn't have to be a $200 gun) and practice with it. I went to a local body shop and asked them if they had any extra paint (enough to do a bike) that they would sell cheap. I got the paint and reducer for 25.00 and the clear with activator for another 30.00 the pearls were 10.00 each. If you use your resources you could get by cheaper so I have around 100.00 into the paint job.

You did a great job with that tank for sure. It looks just as good as any professional job I've seen. Well done!!!
With some practice, and the proper paints, etc., it's not difficult to do a paint job. Most just don't have the patience to try it. PD
