hey folks, I just got my tank flushed to clean out the rust, and the guy said to put oil in it to keep it from surface rusting....?? how am I supposed to coat the inside with oil and what will happen when I put gas back in it? will it just run poorly until it burns out that tank of gas? I still have to paint the tank so I don't want to fill it with gas yet, but what can I do to keep the surface rust down? I rubbed some oil on the lip as far as I could reach with my finger but the interior I cannot reach..

    your help is appreciated.

Just go to the hardware store or Napa and get a gas tank rust stopper kit. Usually they'll come with a rust cleaner, a rust neutralizer, and special paint you'll need to slosh around inside the tank. Try searching the internet for POR-15, I used it some years back an it worked dandy.
Or you could just slosh oil around in there I guess.

Oil is a temporary fix to stop rust. The metal on the inside of the tank started rusting the minute they finished flushing it. A little bit of coating oil will stop that until you can get something better.

You'll see "Kreem Tank Lining" kits everywhere. Avoid them - the stuff is crap unless it's applied PERFECTLY. Even then it's only high-grade crap.

POR-15 Tank Liner is the stuff you want. Pretty easy to apply, and seriously permanant. This is the professional level stuff.

You want to do the lining before painting anyway - so this is a good time for it.

You really don't need to add any sealer if the tank has no holes.
After cleaning, just pour some light oil in tank.
I use about 1/2 cup of Transmission fluid.
Close gas cap and slosh it all around, flipping tank over to make sure you coat all surfaces.
    Done.
Keep it closed up like that until you are ready to use it.
When it's time to use, add about a cup of gas, slosh around, then drain out.
Fill tank with gas and use.
Any oil that was left will burn up, and will not affect performance too much on first tank.
Probably best to run some seafoam through tank on first fill, just to clean out anything strange that might be in the fuel system.
