got this bike last year, ran like a champ, put it in the shed for winter but did not winterize it in any way,(bad i know). when i went to get it out2 weeks ago had to charge the battery, sprayed a little starting fluid in it and it fired right up. let run in shed for about 15 minutes then drove it to my patio, let it run for another 2 minutes or so then shut it off. a week later went to start it again and it wont start, just backfires out the tail pipe.(very loud!) does anyone know what the problem might be and how i go about fixing it?

Im sure someone more knowledgable will chime in but I know a backfire is too much gas igniting (you probably knew that) Have you taken the carbs apart and given them a good cleaning? These are really great and really cheap: https://www.partsnmore.com/motorcycle-c ... =carb_kits Good luck!!!

no, i have not cleaned them. i gues i was hoping after trying to keep starting it , it would evenually start. but im sure that wont happen. i have never done carb cleaning before but im a fairly smart guy. is it something i can do and if so, how to i go about doing that. or should i just take it in to have it done? and how much does that cost?.

you can most definitely do it yourself. There are several threads on carb cleaning, most notable being RickCoMatic's carb cleaning guide under the FAQ suggestions section.

The backfire more than likely means that your idle or enrichment circuits are clogged and providing very little fuel for the cylinders. Say, first stroke it pulls in a very lean mixture (not enough to ignite), the next stroke it pulls in a little more, and then the whole thing ignites, including whatever's left in the exhaust. That's how you get backfire.

The parts that would require immediate attention are the idle jets and the enrichment circuit siphon tube. Both can be found inside the float bowls. But.... why stop there? since you'll have to pull the carbs, follow Rick's cleaning guide and you will have yourself a perfectly functioning set of carbs for the summer :D

Then... next time winter rolls around, you'll be wise to put some Stabil or some Seafoam in your tank, and run it enough to get the mixture through the carbs.

you probably knocked loose whatever deposits may have built up in the bowls over the winter and sucked them up into the jets.

Your enrichment circuit is plugged up. When you used starter fluid you got it over the hump. Could probably do it again, but you need to clean the carbs.
