What jets in Colorado? XJ750 (1983)

    Hi all,
    First post, excited to have found this excellent community!!

    So here's the deal: I just acquired an '83 Maxim 750 from my cousin. The bike sat for roughly two years without any prep. Needless to say the bike runs, but not great. It is exhibiting a few symptoms I have seen other users discuss (won't idle without choke, won't idle at all after it has been ridden, etc.). I ran some carb cleaner through it but it didn't help that much.

    Anyhow, I am facing the reality of the need for a thorough carb overhaul. I figure that while I am in there, I may as well switch out the jets to see if i can't coax a little more grunt from the motor. I live in the Denver area and wanted to see if anyone has had good experience with certain jets at this altitude.

    I haven't rejetted mine yet, and I moved to Denver not to long ago. If the bike sat for awhile, I'd say you need to get into the carbs and clean up em real good. After that, they could use a sync.

    I have the YICS tool and carb sync tool, so after they are cleaned, I'd be happy to help you get the carbs synced. I don't think you can successfully jet it, until after the carbs and cleaned and synced, and see how the engine runs then. But while you have it apart, take note of which jets you currently have.

    Cool, Thanks. I may be giving the bike back to my cousin, it was basically a long term loan. But I may still offer to do the carbs for him and if I do I would definitely appreciate your help.

    I am in colorado springs and would like to set up a carb clinic along with a ride in the colorado area. I had an 82xj750j last year and the year before. I now have a 1985 XJ700. I would also check your valve clearances while you are at it. Its not had to do, just time consuming. The reason I say that is because, if the valves are too lose it will not let enough air into the engine to do a complete burn of the fuel. A good color tune would also be in order.
    Definately clean the carbs also, especially since it sat for so long. I ran stock jets in my 750 along with a K&N air filter and a 4 into one Mac exhaust. It seemed to be a good combination with the stock jetting. Those Mods let it breath just right for the altitude. It also ran like a scalded dog.
    Let me know if there is some interest in the carb clinic as well as the ride. I have the colortune, yics tool, as well as the sync sticks as well. If we all get together I am sure we can get her running the way she should.
