As I read through the forums I notice a lot of very helpful information. I have been up hear reading off and on for the last year or so. But today I decided I need to join so I can post.

I would like to suggest some more how to's for those of us who know which end of a screwdriver to hold or how to rebuild a small block 350, but have never worked on a xj650 or any other bike. I have been looking all over for a simple "how to" on tuning up my bike. Here in NW ohio where the permafrost is finally begining to melt  we can only ride for a few months. Before I put my bike back on the road I want to completely go over it to make sure I am going to have as little down time as possible. I could experiment by opening up covers and detrmining where the oil filter is (done) figure out if I have electronic pickup or points (to do) etc. But it would be great if one of you long time owners went through a pre season checklist and detailed what is best to do.

But hey, I love the site and keep up the great work guys.

That's a good suggestion. A sort of pre-riding-season tune up.

    I'd suggest
    • spark plugs,
    • air filter, and
    • oil change.
I, too, would like to hear from others on what they would add to the list.

I would add check the tires and tire pressure. Look for weather cracking, bulges etc.. As a picky person I would also check cable tensions (clutch and throttle) and just make sure she feels "right when you get on her. My personal quirk is making sure that the seat is locked down. Have this strange idea that if I don't have it locked and lean to far the seat might shift. (it won't but doesn't stop me from worrying about it)

Grab yourself a Factory Workshop Manual.

In the front is a complete schedule of periodic maintenance, when and what.

Then, you just have to go to the appropriate section and follow the detailed instructions along with the photos and illustrations.

There's an exploded view of every component part in the Chapter and Appendix.
