I just used some liquid wrench and it worked too. Of course that was after using the rubber mallet the first few times.....doh!

    Sil-Glyde works well.

yeah i used a block of wood and a ball-peen hammer to drive it forward...

bent the rear flange a little bit which pissed me off MORE than a little bit...

i straightened it out but i dont want that crap happening again...

    thanks

water, if you use lube it never gets tight, wears out the rubbers and the bolt has to hold it in place

I've never had to lube at all.

Every time I've not had it just slip on with a little wiggling was because I had some sort of cable caught in the tank.

Use Sil-Glyde. Best stuff ever invented for these bikes, I use it all over the rubber parts and seals, makes putting things together much easier, especially the rubber-to-metal mating parts. You only need a very little to do the job.

My tank pops right on, but my wife's... I have to straddle the bike, lift the tank up a bit, then wiggle it left and right while pushing forward to get it to seat. Hers is a tight fit for sure. I usually grip the tank on both sides down by the mounting flange then lean forward as a shove it onto the front grommets. It's all in the ass. ;)
