It's like riding a bicycle (not!)

My wife has been demanding for a few weeks now that I teach her how to ride. She says she's tired of being a passenger.

After consulting with the xjbikes gang, I decided that she should first take the MSF beginner's course. After all, she can't even drive a car unless it has an automatic transmission. Wife then proceeded to tell me that she wanted ME to teach her the basics. We ended up agreeing that if I did, she would still take the regular MSF course.

Sooo... today, we went to a local church parking lot, I put her on the bike, and started to explain what all the little knobs and levers were on the bike. I was half-ass expecting a glazed-over look and an ADD moment or two, but she proved me wrong! By the end of the day, she was making circles around the parking lot in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears. We ended up going to 2 other large parking lots around town so she could try a few different things.

So far she can comfortably start the bike (the 550), take off, go through a couple of gears, and stop the bike without stalling it. Other than a few hitches here and there (mostly not enough throttle), she did really good.

There's another XJ chick in town!

I'm calling next week to get her signed up for the MSF course before she gets a chance to learn any of my bad habits.

My goal for the summer is to get the wife to ride on the back (much less drive the thing)

    Good for you (and her)

Great idea to start in the church car park. It's one of those moments where He has to be on your side :)

My wife has her own virago 250 and loves it. We haven't had a chance to head out on the open road together yet, and it's getting a bit chilly, but soon...

    Good luck!

My wife has more bikes than me! But then, she has more shoes than me too. Hmmm. Maybe I need to get more riding "outfits" so I have a reason to get more bikes to match.
