I just bought my first XJ. It wouldn't idle and would die if I would give it throttle. Pulled the carbs a part and found the pilot jets to be completely caroaded shut. Replaced the jets cleaned the carbs and put it all back together. Went to adjust the pilot mixture screws because it know had a very high idle because it was actually getting fuel. Found the number 2 carb pilot screw to be stripped. I drilled the screw and tried to use a screw extractor to get it out. The extractor broke in the screw because it was froze up in the carb. I got the part of the extractor that was stuck in the screw drilled out. Does anyone have any other ideas on how to get the screw out of the carb without messing up the threads?

It's a 1985 700 maxim. Picked it up for 500 bucks. Yeah I was hoping I wouldn't have to get a new carb body. I didn't want to have to pull the rack apart but if it comes down to it I will.

I would recommend you take the rack to a machinists and have them remove the broken parts. They can most likely remove it in minutes without damage. If they are really good, they might run a bottoming tap throught the threads to clean it out for you. Additionally, I would go through and find out now what other screws are stuck on your rack so that you make one trip and not two or three. Good luck and check with Chacal for replacement screws.

at this point you don't have much to loose
try heating the carb body, like hot, real hot, strip it down to nothing and have at it with another ez-out
you can't melt the carb body with a regular propane torch, but try
    i think i used a #2 ez-out
the butterflys have to come out cause the seals will be toast
good luck, you can do it

I have a set of 750 carbs - are they the same as for the XJ700? If they are then you can have them if you pay the shipping cost. I can check the state of the pilot screws and make sure they turn OK

    I think the 700's are Mikuni's. The 750's are definately Hitachi's.

700/750X has Mikunis. 700 aircooled has Hitachi HSC33; earlier 750 aircooled has Hitachi HSC32s.
