Spark plugs are black. I have the right model in. What causes this?

Is it too rich and if so how do i go about changing that?

Probably need more information to diagnose correctly but the best that you could hope for is that the pilot screws are out too much and creating a rich idle mixture.

Down from that would be that someone before you had tinkered with the jets inside the carbies; i.e. replaced with jets of a larger size...

Or, at worst, your piston rings are worn to an extent that oil is getting through to the combustion chamber in greater quantities than necessary and fouling the plugs.

How many miles/kilometres on the bike, hiow long have you had it, what do you know of its history?

don't know any history... the bike has abou 66000 km and i only picked it up for 100 bucks as the guy i bought it from was fed up because he said it was unreliable. Some days it would start for him and others it wouldn't.

He said he rebuilt the carbs but i have no idea to what extent.

It does run... just havn't got it road worthy yet.

With any luck at all ... you may just need a Major Carb Cleaning and a Full Tune-up.

From an all-too-familiar point-of-view ... the PO will do anything to get the Bike he's trying to sell ... "To Run" ... because people don't buy Bikes that DON'T Run.

You are probably needing a thorough Carb Cleaning and all that follows Cleaning the Carbs for a complete Tune-up!
