I tried selling it but got no response but 2 people. I am going to try parting it out only if I get enough people wanting parts so I can make some kinda money from the bike. So if your interested please email me at ordaleharvey@hotmail.com thanks. Everything is fine on the bike but the carbs have a leak in the float tee. The bike is great looking for 22 years old so there is a little surface rust on the exhaust and a couple nicks from road debri.

    Dude,
Whats wrong with bike and how much are you asking? it would seem sad to take a seemingly good bike off the road. Surely someone would pay as much as you would make parting it out.
Why don't you ride it? It's a fun bike.

put it on Craig's list, you'll sell it, trust me. But if you are intent on parting, I'd like the exhaust off it, thanks,

yes it is a fun bike. I called around to see how much the carbs would be to repair and it was 400.00. I really dont want to part with it but if I was going to pay that much to get it rebuilt and synchronized I would assume get a newer smaller bike since I am a newb still. Yes its hard to part with but hey whatever man. Ps. I already put it on craigslist and notta.

Are you still parting this out? If so, is the right side ( while siting on the bike) muffler available?

the bike is freakin gorgeous. you should spend some time on here to see how to fix it properly and keep it on the road. better to learn about it and spend a few hours working on it. you will be glad you did

I have to agree with the others, it's a shame to part it out, but if you do, I will be more than happy to take the carbs off your hands.

We can help you do the carbs yourself - should be less $100 if you have to replace all the seals - less if you don't have to replace everything.

At this point I will take all the help I can get.

I started off stock and went to the K&N pods. What I DIDN'T do was to buy a proper jet kit when I redid the carbs.

I have to rebuild the petcock, (parts enroute) and then re clean the carbs, hopefully that will do it, or at least get it running decent again.

Somewhere in the back of my mind, I am facing the realization that I may have to return to stock until I master the changing to the pods (filters). I thought about buying a second set of carbs, rebuilding them to factory, putting the factory air filter etc back on, in the meantime, take ones off of it that are on it now, and put a DynoJet kit in it (stage 3), and that way, no matter what happens, I have a running bike (not to mention a carb to experiment with).

I have kept this MaximX through multiple trade ins, a few wrecks(other bikes, not her), countless girfriends and a couple of wives.....she ain't going nowhere but home with me....:)

But...while I have you attention, the physical characteristics of the carbs from the various XJ700's appear to be the same, if that's the case, can I buy a set for an 86 XJ700R, will that replace the ones on my MaximX? I know that some internal parts will not match, but if I intend to completely rejet it, will the floats etc work?

I am watching a set on ebay as we speak.....from an XJ700R, Yamaha says they are different part numbers, and the internals are different, but all of them?

    Any help is appreciated.

By XJ700R do you mean XJ700S, the air-cooled version? If so, those are Hitachi carbs and not the Mikunis that were spec'ed on the XJ700XN/XS.

These are the ones I have been watching on eBay.

The lister said they were from an 87 XJ700R, after a bit of investimigating, there was no XJ700 made in 1987, the lister then said it was from an 86.

Yamaha only lists 2 XJ's in 86, the XJ700 and the XJ700XS MaximX

Mine is an 85 XJ700XN MaximX

When I called Yamaha (the parts guy and I are now on a first name basis and buy each other coffee), he said that 'most likely' the carb bodies are the same, but the internal components ie jets et al, would be different.

    Thoughts?

Personally I feel the biggest mistake you made was trying to convert to pod filters. I know some have had good luck but most have found heartache and discontent. Trying to get the jetting right is the key. I tried this with a Kawi years ago and failed miserably.
