New member with a new to them 750.

    Hello, I just acquired an 83 Maxim 750 from my brother in law and found this forum while looking for info about the bike.
    I have actually not ridden any kind of motorcycle for about the last 15 years so it is going to be like starting all over. lol

    The bike is an 83 Maxim 750 with almost 30k on the clock. My brother n law bought the bike about three years ago and rode it for two. The last year it has sat covered in his car port. He quit riding it because he said a float was sticking. Right after he quit riding it he moved into a new house and in the moving lost the keys to it.

    He just bought a new bike and asked if I was interested in his old one (he knows I have been kinda looking for a bike for awhile). I told him if the price was right I would be. He smiled and said if you come and get it I'll give it to you. That was a price to good to pass up. 8)

    The local Yamaha dealer told me if I bring the switch in they can make a key for it. I removed the switch last night and will see if they can make a new key today. Over all the bike looks really good for it's age IMO. The seat has a couple of tears in it and the paint on the tank is really bad. It was red and some one painted it black and did not do proper prep and the paint bubbled and then some one else spayed canned black over that. Also the chrome is a little dull and there is some surface rust on the headers. But for the price it can't be beat. Well enough rambling, it is time to read through the old posts to learn more about setting up the carbs on this thing.

    Do your "Sitting Bike Due Diligence"

    Don't start putting any money into it until you do a Compression Test.
    If it passes the test ...

    Get it running ...

    You should pull-off the Carbs and thoroughly Clean them.
    That's the ONLY way you can judge how well its going to run for you!

    It's not too bad of a job if you take your time and don't suffer setbacks by breaking-off Manifold Cap Screws and finding stuck Jets and Bunged-up Slotos on the Jets and Pilot Screws.

    Welcome to the site. Nice looking bike, I have a 82 I just got a few weeks ago that had set for 2 years with oxidation like yours. Try some mothers crome cleaner in the can and 800 grit sandpaper on thoes engine covers they will look like new. The guys here are very helpfull at getting you up and running just ask any questions they are very knowledgable. Good luck looking forward to your posts.

    Thank you all for the warm welcome. Good news I was able to get a key made for the bike yesterday, now I just need to put in a battery and check out the electrical system, change the plugs, and clean the carbs while I am waiting on my throttle cable and petcock gasket to arrive (they should be here friday).

    Ass.Fault: Thanks for the links, very good information there. 8)

    The plan is to get it running good this summer and enjoy it. Once winter comes I am going to tear the bike down, clean it up, and repaint the bad spots. 8)
