So, here I am with a fresh valve job and the bike is back together. After the thousand others little projects I included it is all finally done! My concern is that when I first started the bike, it wouldn't idle unless the choke was on part way. I realized that without the choke on, the bike was trying to idle at 700-800 rpm. I believe that before it was idling at 1100 or so?? Is it normal to have to readjust the idle after dismantling the top half of the engine or did I maybe bump the screw or something?? Help would be appreciated.

Since it is cold out, it doesn't suprise me that you'd need the "enrichment circuit" on part way to maintain engine speed. Your car does the same thing up to about 160 degrees but you don't know it. After starting, it should go from "full choke" to "no choke" gradually as the engine temp comes up with you maintaining engine speed.

Never rebuilt the top end before, but it sounds perfectly healthy to me.

If you just did a valve job, next on the list should be carb sync, since your vacuum readings are not the same anymore. sync them up and your idle will come back smoother than ever.

thanks guys. seems all the motor needed was some good old fashioned R&R...road and rpms. She runs nice now! And for the record...shaving the head made a very decent power difference.
