Anybody know where I can find a u-joint for an 82 xj650 that won't cost me $250. I'm pricing out parts that I might possilby need this winter.

    I'm sure chacal will know.

Check to see if a '82 Seca 750 is the same--for $35 + shipping off a 20,000 mile bike. PM me.

Somebody must make a small U-joint like that but I've never seen any for sale. My first Yamaha was an XS750 and it had a C-V joint like the one used on the front wheel drive Honda instead of a U-joint so one of those could probably be adapted to fit.

Sim, you might be able to source upgraded joints from a supplier like Grainger or McMaster Carr and have a local shop make a custom shaft for you. I had a modified shaft overhauled on a VW parts-crossover once and it set me back about $60. Best of luck to you. If you had to spend the $250, it might as well be on something bullet proof.
