I'm trying to figure something out that should be simple, but it isn't......

It has to do with the master cylinders on the '82 and '83 XJ750 Maxim models.

Both are the big-bore version cylinders, since they are both dual-disc bikes.

The '82 master cylinder has a low-brake-fluid sensor device inside of the reservoir, and thus has a wire coming out of the bottom (floor) of the master cylinder that handles the signal from this sensor.

The 1983 master cylinder has no such sensor, and thus no wire coming out of the bottom of the master cylinder.

All of the above is known to be true and correct.

What I am tring to determine is this: which direction/orientation does the master cylinder fluid outlet port---where the brake hose bolts up---face in each of those two yeas.

The original Yamaha parts diagrams and service manuals are a mess on this issue. Some diagrams show a fluid outlet port that faces "forward" (pointed in the same direction as the top of the letter "Y" in the word "YAMAHA" that is cast into the cylinder cover), while other diagrams show the fluid outlet port facing to the left SIDE of the master cylinder (to the side and to the left of the letter "Y" on the cover).

Can I have a show of hands, stating whether you know whether your master cylinder is truly the original one on the bike, what year XJ750 Maxim you have, and which orientation the fluid outlet port is facing?

And yes, 750 Midnight Max owners can participate, too....... :D

    Thanks!

Canadian model 1983 XJ750 Midnight Maxim..............

Fluid outlet port comes out the left side of the reservoir, not the front.

I only got the bike last month but have no reason to believe it is not the original MC.

Thanks guys for the confirmations! This is how I have always known it to be but some people have said otherwise, and the Yamaha service and parts manual conflict with this (and with each other, actually!).

If anyone does have a "forward-facing" fluid outlet port on their bike, I'd like to know more about it..........

Okay, I can breath easier again.....Schmuck has a side-exit master cylinder, AS WELL IT SHOULD BE. And hey, that's a scary looking cover on that thing!

Your brake lines appear to have been made in March of 1982, so I think we need to replace them..............
