Not done this before and the bike has been with me a few years now so...
can anyone tell me what torque to tighten to or do people just do a 'feel thing',sort of hand-tight ?
    Thanks

If you are talking about the mounting bolts they are 7.2 ftlbs. The tensioner cap that holds the springs in is 11 ftlbs. This is for the auto tensioner which the XJ600 should have. The US 92 model has an auto tensioner.

Don't think it's an auto-tensioner. There are two mounting bolts holding the body of the tensioner to the engine and then a perpendicular bolt with lock nut. Maybe they saved a few quid on uk models.

According to Haynes I have to loosen the lock nut, tighten bolt to specified torque, tighten lock nut. Unfortunately it then forgets to tell me the tension.
Do you have the adjuster bolt tension as well?

    Thanks

I adjusted mine a few weeks back. I would think once the bolt is good and snug, not tight as all get out but in place well, just lock the nut into place. It has worked for me. Even if it is 7-11lbs. or torque, snug is right at that. I ran a few days then did it again just to be sureit hit the correct tension. Besure to rotate the engine like the book says.

The bolt is torqued to 4.3 ftlbs and the lock nut to 6.5 ftlbs.
