ok, i just got this bike, so please be kind
the bike was running rich, so the previus owner took off the air filter box to work on the carb, then he can't put the filter box back on, becasue the rubber connector dont' fit, he was too cheap to buy replacement for it, and so he rode for 200 miles without air filter.

then he sold the bike to me ($700), and i ordered all the parts for it, and it won't run with the air filter box on, so i took it off, and rode for 50 miles on it, without air filter(er just to test ride it)

one day i give it full throttle for the first time, the throttle cable snagged, it ran full speed at 3rd gear, so i shift to 4, then 5, to slow down my engine, i forgot i have a engine kill switch(because i stopped ridding for 5 yrs),
right before i ran out of road, i hit the kill switch and all is well.

I barely made it back home in one piece, eversince that incident engine rpm stays high even if i don't give any throttle

I fixed the throttle cable, but it always idle high, around 3000, so i mess with the air screw, nothing changes, it's been about 1 week, today, it idles at 7000 rmp

I think i have to do a carb cleaning, carb rebuild, I do not have the money to take it to a shop, so here i am begging for help

I am new to fixing bikes, but I am willing to learn
I'll do everything in my power to get it running correctly again

Hey, Mike. You might wanna start by posting your location. You never know where there's another XJer who's itching to fix someone's bike for them... You might have the help you need right around the corner!

one of several things could be wrong.

if the bike is running without an air filter, it more than likely has dirt in the carbs. Getting that airbox back in with the engine in there may require a beer or two and some work. I've done, it, but it wasn't fun. much easier with the engine out. I'd clean the carbs off the bike (obviously) and then try to get that air box back in (a foot came in handy in one situation I was in)

I'd trace the throttle cable. I had this happen to me 2x where it got pinched and just idled at 6k.

The most recent thing that happened to me is that the idle adjustment screw between 2 and 3 carb was stuck and required some lubricant and some working before it functioned properly. I'd help you out, but I'm all the way in Virginia.

thank you mcraw, i'll get on that beer, and see if i can use my foot to push the air box in

i found the soultion for the bike, i brought myself a kawasaki 125 elimiator today, it rides like a bicycle, but i'll use it to fetch parts for my xj until it's fixed
