Hi all I just got this 82 xj750 from a friends dad for $200 for my first bike. I was looking for something smaller but the deal was too good to pass up. The bike is in pretty good shape and has 28k on it but has been sitting since 02. With the help of this forum I removed the carbs and cleaned them. Not the bike starts right up and runs pretty good but the idle hangs up some. I am thinking its one or more of the slides sticking. I cleaned them good when i had the carbs off but didn't polish them because I didn't know how. I heard of the "clunk test" but had no idea wtf it was until I had the bike back together lol.

Cool bike, that wind sheild will help too.
BTW you might need to adjust the rear brake pedal.
Looks a tad higher than needed.
And reroute the clutch cable too

I think RiCoMatic has a slide polishing thread on the forum.
A quick search will more than likely pull up some posts

Oh, and add an INLINE FUEL FILTER ASAP.
It will save you tons of trouble in the future
Easily aval from local auto parts stores, 1/4" in/out

Thanks for the replies. I know the clutch cable goes under the tank in that pic the tank was just sitting there and not mounted properly. I cleaned and polished up the slides and bores and it helped a little but the idle is still sticking a bit. The bike will idle down it you tap on the carbs so I guess one of the slides is still sticking a bit. I will get a filter on it asap considering how much crap was in the carbs when i cleaned them it needs one.

What did you use for polishing the bores?
