YICS tool - insert and forget?

    I used the search option but couldn't find what I was looking for.

    I read a YICS tool discussion a while back where someone suggested inserting the YICS tool, leaving it there, and "ride forever".

    What I want to know: is that really a good idea?

    As I understand it, the YICS was invented as a way of increasing gas mileage without impacting performance. If that's true, then it seems keeping the tool inserted wouldn't hurt anything. And if it doesn't hurt anything, why not do as he suggested and leave it there?

    Well of couse it can be done. It would eliminate the balance tube which is all a YICS port is. In time however one or more of the seals on the tool may start to leak. This would cause an imbalance on one or more carbs. If the end seal leaks it would cause a lean condition on either #1 or #4 cylinder which could lead to damage. That is why I wouldn't suggest it.

    Regarding leaving the YICS tool for ANY extended period of time:

    Follow Nike's advice, JUST SAY NO!

    In fact, it's not a bad idea to withdraw the tool while you have the engine shut down in-between colortuning cylinders....whemever the engine gets shut down (to move the colortune plug from one cylinder to the next), remove the tool and allow it to cool, also.

    If those rubber seals ever melt, you've got a BIG mess on your hands.........

    How about JB welding the holes shut? or a high temp epoxy?

    YICS is why your 550 (when properly tuned) will run circles around a lot of modern bikes, even ones of larger displacement. IT WORKS. With that motor, in that state of tune, it's necessary if you want full performance out of that little mill. Why mess with it? How many miles are on your bike, and have you adjusted your valve clearances yet? It will make an AMAZING difference in how the bike performs if it needs it.
