How much is an 86 XJ650 Maxim worth in decent condition with about 19K on the odometer? I mean, chrome good, gas tank has no dents or rust, seat in good condition, etc. Not showroom finish, but just a nice bike.

    Did they make a xj650 in 1986?

Not that I can find, but that is what the gentleman told me on the phone last night. He wan'ts $300 for it, so I thought I would fix it up and sell it, but don't know what the going price is. I want to make something off the bike once I buy parts, etc...

According to my XJCD, for 1986 I find these:
    XJ600 - Europe - Model #51H or 51J
    XJ700S - USA - Mod#1NH
    XJ700S - CAN - Mod#1NJ
    XJ700SC - USA - Mod#1NK
    XJ700XS - USA - Mod#1NW
    XJ700XSC - USA - Mod#1LT
    XJ750XS - CAN - Mod#1MY

For $300 I'd say have a look at it, and unless its a bunch of rusted crap in boxes - buy it.

If it runs and won't take much to get in sellable condition, you can't go wrong for $300. I'd say you should be able to sell it for $1200-1500 for a good looking, good running bike that doesn't need any major repairs.

I went to see a parts 650 once... all he wanted was 100$ but every usable part on it had been damaged (he claimed by his younger siblings). It was the saddest xj that I'd ever seen - if all of the damage from rocks being thrown at it had of been undone it might have been worth salvaging :(

I didn't buy it - even for $100... it really pissed me off that someone could do that to an old bike... :(

Yeah, I saw a picture of this bike and it looks to be in fairly good condition, no major rust, tires need replacing, engine turns over, but needs a battery and probably carbs cleaned to start, tank in good condition, seat in good condition. I mean it looks like a good bike. He also has a 83 Kawasak KZ250 LTD with Belt drive for $200 or both for $400. Still trying to figure out what I want to do.

    Thanks for the info guys!

Get both for $400!! You can easily make your money back off the two of them, especially if you have the time and the room.

time I have, room is getting a little cramped as I have two XJ550's, a Kawasaki 440, a Honda CM250, a Kawasaki KZ650 and a Honda three wheeler. Man, I got that many crammed in there? No wonder I can't get to the air compressor! :D

    Im going to disagree here...

For $300 yes if the rubber is good... If the rubber isnt good your looking @ a $150-$200 investment right there...

Next thing to look at is the carb boots. THese are the boots between the cylinders and the carbs. If they are cracked they are unuseable for the most part... They cost about $130 from the dealer and there is no cheaper or aftermarket alternative for the 650...

Im also going to disagree on the $1200-1500 price tag. My bike is pretty damn good looking for an XJ (not to toot my own horn) and I was interested in selling it to get back part of my investment to move onto another bike. I got in the range posted and I havent got any serious bites in that range...

Heres a pic of my bike for yucks:

So unless cosmeticaly the bike can clean up this good and has good parts I mentioned its really not worth that much. Especially if your only goal is to just resale it and make a profit...

There isnt any profit in these bikes, take my $1500+ expiernce for what its worth (not that I was doing mine for resale)...

The boots are available aftermarket from several venders, and I've seen them for as little as $99.00.

Isn't there a fix on here somewhere using silicone and bicycle tubes? Sounds good to me, especially if one doesn't care about having a beauty pageant winner, which includes me.

    Regards,

    Hmmm...

Even @ $99 they are not cheap.

The guy at the local bike shop showed me some other boots for Yams, similar in price to the maxim 650's. Then showed me the aftermarket ones and they were like $30...

Now who makes an aftermarket one for the XJ650? I would like to inform him so hes aware and also for refference to others that ask. Thanks :)

i wish we had deals like that in my city. I say buy both, put the ltd engine on the back of a downhill skateboard and have some insane fun. Then once you get out of the hospital, restore the xj. Around here motorcycles, especially ones like xj and the like can go for around 1000 to 2000 $cdn in good rideable condidtion. So you should be able to turn profeit on it.

    Good old Sak town!

Ahhh back tot he carb boots...

The one is direct oem (Parts n more) and the other aftermarket is actually more expensive than oem...lol

The fixes... I used a sealant on mine. It did help and at the time I figured corrected the problem. THe fact is it didnt. I replaced them and the bike was a whole new beast...

Especially when they get hot, boy do the get hot, the materials used to fix it give way... Especially since they have been soaked with gas for 20+ years...

I tried for weeks to find a decent bike for 1k or less.... Any decent running XJ within 200 mi of KC has been bringing $1000 to $1500 or more even on eBay... $300 sounds like a steal - you have plenty of room for tires, carb work and misc. before exceeding market value, at least in my area....

Yeah, I think the re-sale value also depends on the area. Around my parts they are on the rise for a lot of the older 'Vintage' bikes. I have seen prices range from $500 to $2100 for a 550 Maxim. And up here it seems that with more POWER on these older bikes, the more they are being sold and bought for.

There is also a shop up here in Eugene Oregon that sells aftermarket carb boots for almost all the models of XJ's and other bikes. If they don't list it on their web site, you can email them and they can get them for you. I forgot what they are called but can post it later when I get home from work.

I will be heading down tomorrow to look at the guys bikes. I will post back after I make the decision and hand over the cash. Thanks for all the replies guys!
