Hi: I just picked up a 1986 750 maxim x and am looking for a backrest, either original or does anyone know if a backrest from the newer model bikes available at dealers can be simply modified to work.I already have the details to make one, but would prefer one already finished if there is one out there.
    thanks

    They are unobtainium!
I saw one on Ebay yesterday....starting at $200 and buy it now for $275
pretty rare to say the least.

It is a nice one though!

The 85 and 86 maxim X (and maxim) took a different backrest than the other bikes.
I BELIEVE the virago fits, but the mount goes through the fender and changes the look of the "fender stays" from what I have heard.

I just bought a parts bike, 1981 maxim 650, and it has one of those sliding adjustable backrests. The ones that the rider can use if there isn't a passenger. I will never use it if someone is interested. Not sure what it will fit but it looks somewhat universal.

My 82 XJ650 Maxim has a seat with a built in upholstered backrest with a separate metal frame behind it. I'm going to get rid of them. If you're interested, I can take some pictures and we could talk about a price.

    Thanks,
    Dean
