Let me start right off by saying sorry for taking up space with something that I am sure has been discussed here at least 100 times (although I can't seem to find the answer I need) - so if this is a question that already has an answer posted please just take the time to point me in the right direction.

My story: I ordered a manual from a local shop for my 83 xj50 maxim but the part prices were ridiculous, then I found this site and ordered the parts from chacal (who by the way was a huge help and when I find the proper place to post my official props I certainly will) but I did not order a manual as I didn't want to have two. The one I ordered is backordered and now I have parts and no manual so here is what I need . . . (other than to order a manual from chacal)

Does anyone know what the valve clearances are supposed to be on the 83 xj750 maxim . . . and can you give me a rough idea how to check that - I need someone to piece together everything else that I have read on here so that I can be sure that I understand.

Thanks for any help that is available.

    Intake .11 - .15mm
    Exhaust .16 - .20mm

You use a feeler gauge with the cam lobe pointing away from the valve.

If you pull the LH cover (over the crankshaft) off there is a square nut on the timing rotor that you can use to turn the engine.

On top of the valve is a little holder called a "bucket". In the bucket is a shim. If your clearances are off you need to remove the shim and replace with one that is the correct thickness. The thickness is written on the bottom of the shim.

Shim thickness is in 100ths of a mm. So a 260 shim is 2.60mm. They are available in increments of .05mm.

There is a special tool to hold the bucket down so you can pull the shim. Check with Chacal.

Oh, if you check my gallery you'll see photos of measuring valve clearances.

also, take out spark plugs for easy turning of the engine.
also, search for 'zip tie method' for holding valves open to remove shims, saves buying a tool.

The zip tie method involves inserting a folded zip tie through the spark plug hole and under the valve to hold it open.

I haven't tried any method other than the tool. I wonder though if a piece of 12ga electrical wire with the insulation still on it wouldn't work better than the zip tie.
