ATF fluid or fork oil?

I am doing the fork seals in my 82 xj 750 seca i have always used automatic transmission fluid (ATF) in the forks on all of my other bikes but this bike calls for 20wt fork oil. can i still use ATF fluid or will it damage the forks?

 

Do not use the ATF, use 10w/30, 309cc each side. Drain and refill at first opportunity.

 

i havent put the atf in yet cause my forks are in a million peaces atm but 10w-30 motor oil? never heard that b4. i have 15w-40 at the shop where i work can i use that ?

 

My XXXL sized body needs some real dampening up front.

I use Permatex Hydraulic Jack Oil.
No problems and very little (none) bottoming-out up front.

 

well ty for the help i still am crying cause the last moron to own the bike striped the Allen bolt on the bottom of the left fork and i cant figure out how im gonna get it out and of course its the left that needs to be done. i think he did the right striped the left and gave up cause the boot on the left looks older than the right

 

I'm a big boy too, and when I put the Progressive springs up front, I also switched to 15wt fork oil -- been wonderful ever since

 

I am following this thread with interest. I'm using ATF and I have lots of front end dive when using the front brake. I was considering 10W40 to stiffen it up some...

 

Anyone tried the "cartridge Emulators"?
( the little gold thingies in the wish book)
They say they improve the ride.

But how?

 

They make the front end lighter by eliminating a couple of hundred dollars from your wallet.

 

Are you sure it's stripped out, and not just the nut spinning inside the fork tube?

 

We have been using a special blend of ATF that is made by BG Products. It is the "green" colored synthetic fluid. It does not break down the rubber and aluminum like normal fluids do and as such they last much longer.

The head experimental tech at BG is one of our members in the Vmax club and the head quarters are located here which is how I came to meet him and get him joined up. He has a number of other Yamaha's too.

ATF is 7 w oil.. No surprise as to why yer not getting much fork dampening action .

 

Huh, I thought it was 0W20. But I've been wrong before!

 

well im going to try rotella T 15w40 cause i have gallons of it at the shop and i happen to enjoy a really stiff front end. on all or my chopper projects i have always used springer front ends and have grown accustom the the feel. plus on a bike where i sit as forward as this one i really want a stiffer front end.
