Carbs must be running rich. '80 650. Black smoke on downshift and I can smell it as well. How do I adjust the richness? Thanks! BTW great board!

You should do some reasearch on "Mixture Adjustment Screw"
Carelessness in this type of wrenching will get you in a bind.

A colortune is a tool advised for this type of work.
Also make sure your air filter element is clean.
    Are the carbs synced?

As far as I know they are. The bike runs PERFECT other than the smoking on deceleration. It does however idle a bit high once it's warmed up. Could this also be linked to the richness adjustment?

    Yes it could.
You might also have some Valve Seals that are leaking during downshifting.
    More on that later.

The Pilot Mixture Screws determine the Richness of the Mixture.
Look at the Plugs and inspect their color.
Too Dark ... turn the Mixture Screw on the dark ones in the width of a Nickel.

Probably won't see one too light if you are smoking ... but, if you do you adjust the Mixture Screw for that one ... Out.

Take a picturue of the ends of the Pluugs 1 2 3 4 and Post the picture.
Lets see what you are dealing with.
