I turn 39 next month, WOW how'd that happen. I have had my motorcycle liscense for 12 years now but only been riding actively for 3 years. My first bike was a 1984 Suzuki 550RS. Thats the bike I learned on. Sure does seem like ages ago.

I will be 63 in another 3 months. Been riding since I was 21. That makes, what? 42 years! What happened? My first bike was a 1966 Yamaha YDS3 250 twin two stroke. Next, a 1968 AT1 125 Enduro, wasn't big enough! Next a 1969 CT1 Enduro. Kept that one for years until my teenage son got it stolen....... Then a 1977 XS750 Triple, Great bike! A 1983 XJ750 Maxim, then a 1987 Honda TLR 200 Enduro. Now own a 1984 Honda XR200R, the greatest for dirt and a 1982 XJ750RK Seca, great street bike and my Gas Saver, over 50 MPG average. Hope to continue riding for some time to come

I'm 38, and it makes me shudder to think that I got my first bike at 8 years of age (Honda XL75). It just dawned on me that my son is now that exact age that I was when I first started. I went for my motorcycle license within a month after I turned 16 (one week after I received my car license). I went on a 12 1/2 year hiatus as a rider... which ended last night !! First ride on my 750 Maxim since 1995 and man, was it sweet !

I'll be 26 on June 29th. I purchased an 83 XJ900 3 weeks ago. It's the first bike of any kind that I've ever ridden, let alone owned. I love it. I'm afraid I'm hooked for life.

I'll be 50 in November. Started riding dirt bikes in the streets and on the side of the parkways on Long Island - got chased alot by the cops, LOL. Rode yamahas and suzukis, then got my driver's license and bike license and rode a brand new 1981 Suzuki 450E (nice little bike) - jumped right to a brand new Suzuki 1100E (best bike i've ever riden-kick ass fast!) stopped riding in the late 80's (don't know why, maybe the DWI's had something to do with it) Started riding again 20 years later when i moved down here to Florida. A guy i worked with had "this bike" i could have for $10 bucks a week till i paid it off ($500) it needed EVERYTHING. It wasn't exactly what i wanted but it was cheep!! So now i have a 1983 Yamaha XJ750. I gave it new rubber and some rewiring, some paint, and a new tail light and started to ride. I was scared shitless, the bike was junk!. I rebuilt the front forks, and bought all new cables, got the carbs syncronized, and slowly but surely the bike started to ride better and gave me a safer feeling on the road. gets 48MPG, and i ride to work every day.

Wow, didn't know this thread was going to get so many responses. There is a great mix of old and new riders. I guess that's what makes this site so bad a$$. There's always someone to learn from or teach.

28 in about a week. the Maxim is my first bike, but I like wrenching on old things...

I like wrenching on bikes better than cars. Easier to get to things, and parts are cheaper. Maybe I'll get rid of the Olds to get a second 2-wheeler...

Before last week I rode a few friend's dirt bikes back in the early 80's.

I'm 45 years of age and started riding 26 years ago, but all the years owning and really riding, only about 6 years. Sadly can not make-up those lost years. First was a Yamaha Exciter 250, picked up my latest 82 Seca 750 with 15.8k about a year ago. Bought it because I wanted to ride, not because of gas prices.

63 in July. Been riding something since about 14. I'm a little concerned about the age breakdown of your question, though. You need a 60-70, 70-80 and a 80-90. I intend to use them all.

Yeah, I'm still on my first bike, too.

34 years old, been riding 13 years (with about 3 years off in there). My Seca has nearly 28k miles - 11.5k of those are not from me.

I'm 60. Started back ride'n a year ago. First bike was a 750 Suzuki, rode the wheels off of it. That was back in the late 70's. Last year I picked up a 1980 sx1100, got hooked all over again. Just bought a '81 xj550 for my wife.

I turn 60 in August '08 and I don't think I've turned into my dad yet....maybe I should ask my son if I have.

Started riding a year ago this spring on a Harley 1200 Sporty purchased from a good friend. Rode a Yamaha FJ1200 and realized the first bike was a pig, so I bought the FJ1200. Next rode a Honda Super Blackbird and that put a smile on my face so I got one of those. I find it hard to part with them so I still have them all. I am trying to sell the Harley. I'm now nursing an '83 seca 750 with the touring package back to road worthiness for my son to learn to ride. Nearly there with the help of many good people on the site. Thanks all.
The XJ feels like a solid bike that's easy to repair and restore with tons of parts and a lot of good advice available.

34 for another month and a half, been riding a little less than a year unless you count dirt bikes when I got the chance. My 82 650 is my second bike, started on a XS400 but wanted something with a bit more engine and the 650 was a really good deal.

I'm 50 and I had a motorcycle before I had my first car. I rode the wheels off of it and put them back on again. I had to sell my 82 650 Maxim back in 1985 to pay some bills and have not had any bikes in 22 years. I'm glad to be back and hope to keep my bikes all running well. Thanks to this forum and the members that have helped me its been a great experiance to own these XJ's

New guy here, and can't believe I'm in the second to oldest group at 46. Oh well. First bike, first time rider. I always rode mini-bikes that belonged to friends as a kid, have spent years on bicycles as a commuter (through school, and some work assignments) and now have a 30+ mile commute and a 17 mpg vehicle. Had to do something.

I've always jumped at the chance to ride machines with motors, but have never hung with the cool folks who owned them (at least not consistently). So now I've made my own opportunity. Glad to be here. Just gotta get my cert, and on the road I'll be. :D

I'm 47 also in the second to oldest group. My XJ750 Maxim is the first bike I've owned, I bought it right out of the crate in 85 and have only ridden it a little (22k miles). This isn't the first bike I have ridden, I guess the first was a mini bike when I was about 12 or 13 and then my friends bikes. One thing I have done is kept this bike out of the weather (except for when you get caught in those pop up storms, which have been a few). When I'm not ridding I keep it in garage, but lately I haven't ridden it much. I need to do a little work on it like battery, tune up, tires and PA inspection to get it street worthy but since I drive 45 miles each way to and from work and own a Nissan Pathfinder (also 17 mpg) it's time to invest some money, polish her up and hop back on.

Been riding since I was 14? but remember wandering up to a rider asking him what O.H.C meant on his engine when I was about 8 and he told me.My mum was resigned apparently its genetic, she spent a lot of time on a triumph along with various other members of the family. But of course when I came home with a bike it was the end of the world.
Bikes I have owned, Honda monkey bike never got it to run, when I came home to take it back to where I was living at the time turned out my mum had carefully taken it apart so she could throw it out in the council bin over a few months unreal, the lady never held at tool in her life but she figured it out when she needed to.
Then a Honda CB250 drum brake front end approximately 69 model, thought it was fast and to be honest for my skill level it was.Next up was a Honda VT250 much faster much more sophisticated BUT when it started making this knocking noise took it to the honda dealer and he flat out refused to work on it leading to a life long distrust of mechanics and complex mechanicals.
Turned out to be a bent valve a mate told it was already stuffed why not pull it apart and have a look cost me about $20 and beer we had to do it twice had the timing out on reassembly cheap lesson.
Next one was the 1983 XJ750 seca put 70000kms on that bike in a year traded it on a GSX1100EFE a year to the day after purchase of the XJ.
Good bike but didn't have the sweet balance of the XJ,took it to my uncles place after I bought it because everytime I bought a bike I gave him a ride.He refused to take it because in his words it was too powerful, the burnout I did before offering the bike may not have helped here.
    Good bloke my uncle Colin.
Next one was couple of years later because the speeding fines were just getting to be too much.
83 GSX750 rode that to Queensland[Different state 900k] because I got retrenched from my job and figured what the hell.
Met a girl[thank god]saved me from myself and sold the GSX needed a car [kids used to cry when strapped to the rack].
Anyway 4 kids later I had some leave owing and took it in cash which magically turned into a 83 XJ750RL,I was looking for a 900 but I'm man enough to cope with a 100 or so less cc.
Around 5 or 6 years later I'm pretty happy but to be honest it would probably have been cheaper to buy a new 650 or something but I like using my hands and keeping it running I dont worry to much about cosmetic stuff but finding parts can be a drama.
Oh that's right point of the thread I'm 42 for about 6 more months glad to here from you blokes that are still riding in your 60's means I might have some time for myself and the mrs after all.
    Sorry about the novel folks.

27 and I just bought my first bike. It's an '82 750. It runs suprisingly well for a 26 year old bike. I got it for $900. Whether or not that is a steal is yet to be seen. I've been riding now for a week and so far so good. Bought it from a retired cop who said he rode it daily to and from work. It's got 23k on it, and I'm slowly finding and working out the kinks. I just replaced the speedo cable because it was sheered. I plan to rebuild the carbs and I need to replace the fork seals. Then, it should just be a primp and polish as I replace the pipes, repaint the tank, and try to get some luster back into the aluminum.

I am 49, at least until November when I cross that mystical barrier.

Except when I am riding my bike.

Then, I am that young kid who took his brothers BSA 650 for a ride when he was gone for the weekend. I was 14 at the time. I had been riding a Hodaka ACE 100 for years at this point. And now, I was on a Motorcycle.

Damn, I still wear that sh**-eating grin everytime I hope on a motorcycle. It was worth, well almost, getting divorced to get one again.

And now, my kids love riding on the thing so much, I have created converts.

52 years old, and the XJ700 is my 7th motorcycle (I think). I started riding at 19, took about 23 years off and have recently resumed it.

Wish I hadn't let it go so long.

I'll be 38 july 14 and my 81 SECA 750 is my first bike. I started riding spring of 2007. I took the riding course at the local community college. Has to be best money I spent!

Heh, I feel like a baby here! I'm 25. I've been dirtbiking since I was 10, and bought a crotch rocket not too long ago, cause I wanted a bike. Soon realized how much it sucked to ride on for more than 20 minutes at a time, and got a Maxim 650 :D And I love it!

HEY watch the fossil remarks...I'm 56 years YOUNG and have been riding since age 13. My first official streetbike was a 1966 Honda CB160 SPORT (not Benly or Dream) and I cut my teeth on British bikes. Bought my '74 Norton new and kept it that way ever since. Been through a progression of Triumphs, BSAs and even a couple Yamaha SR500's, the Seca I rescued from beside the road back in April is my first 4-cyl. Plan to keep riding until I drop over dead.

I guess I'm not that old and I'm not that young. I'm 43 and started riding at age 8. I raced in the dirt until I was 23. My first street bike was a Yamaha Vision and I've had a bunch in between but I keep coming back to the xj700. I first saw the bike in a show room in 1986 when I got married and I could not afford it. I finally got one and have had 3 since. I can't seem to be without one. I also just sold my 1998 Harley Heritage Softail Classic that I didn't really enjoy. I would like to end up with the XJ and a Gold Wing but that will be a few more years down the road.

    Keep Smiling
