Runs but wont drive

Hey whats goin on guys new to the forum. I aquired a 1985 Xj700 Maxim X. I've taken the carbs apart twice and cleaned them better the second time. My bike will start when cold and still run once warmed up. But for some reason i am not able to drive it, it dies as soon as i try and take off. Any suggestions would be great. I would also like to know where some of these maxims get the lower fairings.

Welcome to the forums! I would check the clutch adjustments. Could be that it is to tight and it is killing the motor when you let off it. Just a stab in the dark but would be something to check. There should be an adjustment where the clutch cable connects to the lever. Try that and hopfully that will do the trick if not somebody else will probley chime in with some other ideas. Also you should put in your signature your bike year/model. That way people don't have to ask what you have. Also reccomended that you update your fuse panel and add an inline fuel filter. Just thought I would let you know. Thatway if you have any other problems you can say that you did those things already. Good luck!

 

does it die when you put it into gear, or will it go into gear and dies when you try to pull away.

Even if its long ... tell us EVERYTHING that you did and everything you do to try to get going.

 

Sounds a lot like a safety switch.....

As Rick said, be more specefic....

 

does the bike roll freely? are you sure you've got it in 1st when trying to pull away?

 

We don't know what's causing the bike not to go. Does it shut-down when you select first gear? Does it run, but not get into gear? We need a few of these questions answered before we can begin to offer assistance, I would say.

Check to see that the linkage to the side stand relay is operating freely if the bike shuts down. More often than not, the side stand linkage will begin to bind over time, if not kept clean ... and cause the engine to stop running when a gear is selected because the switch is still closed.

Situations like that ...

But, we don't know what ... ???

 

Sorry i'll update my info and check the clutch cable to start. When it dies its after i have shifted it into 1st, not when i shift into first if thats any help and RickoMatic ill give you a call.
