Well ive run in to a lil dilema, in the process of disassembly i think some parts have been misplaced, my question is what on the header pipe am i missing so that these can bolt up to the head, here are some pics with the area circled that im referring to any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Two of those split collars, one asbestos gasket, and one aluminum flange per cylinder. I think the wrap may not be allowing the pipes to seat properly...I don't think it should extend beyond the outer surface of the aluminum exhaust flange. I have never wrapped pipes before,so maybe someone that has can offer more accurate advice.

I believe that I may have given some incorrect information. I must have confused this exhaust with one from a different bike. Can anyone verify that the 650 Maxim, infact, utilizes NO split collars to secure the exhaust?
    RickCoMatic?
    Chacal?
    Anyone?
    Thanks,guys!

Here's a picture from the online Yamaha Cat. for an '81 650 Maxim...

#11 is an Exhaust Pipe Gasket
#12 is a ring nut, and
    #13 is just a nut.

I have all those pieces, but the end of my pipe going into the head has no collar for the ring nut to catch and push into the head. THX

Does your exhaust system look like the one I've attached or is it something different? If it's different, the aftermarket systems may use a different sealing technique. This may be the case as your pipes appear to be bell-shaped on their ends. The stock pipe should be straight and sjip into the exhaust ports in the head IIRC.

Only thing different is that mine is an aftermarket 4 into 1 exhaust, right were the flange is there should be a collar of some sort to press up against the end of the header to push it into the head once tightened, in the one picture i started to machine out a shaft collar and split it in half so that the flange has something to push against.

Did you wrap those headers yourself? I'm no expert, but you may find you'll need to remove the wrap under the split collars. The extra layer may increase the O. D. of the pipe enough so it won't fit into the manifold. Just a guess.

Upon closer inspection,I realize that no split collars are used (Severe cranial flatulation episode here!). Thanks for your attachment,Gamuru. It really helps to clarify things. And I almost wet myself when I saw your avatar!!! ( Okay,so maybe I DID pee a little...)

I did wrap them myself which let me tell you is quite interesting without another set of hands, there is no issue with them fitting properly with in the head already had them in there but found out that i was missing something, so it looks like i need to make a collar for each pipe at work, i'll let you guys know what i come up with.
