New to motorcycles and XJs. Used to have a scooter back in the day before Vespa pulled out of the US in the 80's. Never did any serious motorcycle riding. Been lurking here and on a few other sights before buying a bike. I've been looking looking for a project bike. An XS650, Sr400-500s, Seca, or a CB. Ran across a Maxim 550 on craigslist for $350 and scooped it up. It is definitely a project bike but is complete minus the seat. motor turns over. Needs the usual shakedown on the fuel and electrical system to get her running and a few other components replaced I'm sure.

Meanwhile I'll be gathering up the appropriate clothing and taking the BRC.

Welcome aboard! I'm sure you will enjoy the Maxim a bunch after you get her going and this is the web site to help with that. Lots of experience posting here.

When gas hit $3.50 a gallon, I pulled my Vespa out, got it legal and it now is my errand runner. I love it, but then I love most anything on wheels.

That's what I was told. The title says 550cc.

I originally wanted to put together a VW trike as I am heavily into VWs. That never materialized and when gas got more expensive I thought about a cheap scooter, which I still may do, or a bike.

Plan on getting a seat for the maxim of course, and then getting her running and road worthy. Then I will probably pull it down for some paint and minor customizing. A mild bobber look.

Yes, mine used to be a 550 max until I customized it.

Glad you got a bike and welcome! Some pics would be cool...

The 550 is a nice bike. Hard to call it little though. The only difference from what I have seen is that it only comes as a chain drive.

Yeah its a chain drive. Rusty old chain at this point. Is there an interchange manual for these bikes. When I'm searchin for parts it be nice to know what other maxims or yamahas would fit. Like seats for instance. Will some of the other years and sizes fit my bike?
