You can't do a final synch on a set of carbs off of the bike that the carbs will be operated on----because you don't really synch the carbs, you synch the engine (mis-leading terminology is everywhere!). Synching means measuring the individual vacuum draw of each cylinder unit, and that depends on much more than just the individual carb's contribution to that cylinder........you ADJUST the throttle valve positioning on each carb to adjust the power output of each cylinder (either opening up or choking down each carb's throttle valve opening-positioning), but again, what you're doing is adjusting the power output of each cylinder.

And again, re-jetting can only be done properly on via an individual bike, on-engine, trial-and-error method. Installing pods is a great way to insure that you'll be spending a lot of time getting real-world, hands-on experiece in matters such as carb removal and re-installation, jet changing, engine synching, and carb tuning.

Anyone who tells you otherwise (and Rick won't be one of those who do) is just wanting to dip into your wallet via false promises.

Ditto what Chacal said. In all reality, the "cheap" way to get your carbs done right is to do them yourself. Word out in XJ world is that getting anyone to touch a +20 year old bike is nigh impossible and eight times out of ten the tech does not have the knowledge (but we do!) on the intimate details concerning these older carbs. Ergo a poor "cleaning" will be the result, despite having had your wallet "cleaned" out as well.
