Vtwin, water cooled and shaft drive, Fun bike to ride and gets great gas mileage. If it looks good keep it and have fun with it. Its been 20 years since I had one and only had it for a short time, LOL think it was a loaner from one of the shops after I was involved in an accident.

From what I have heard (and this has been precious little) they are a nimble bike that is fun to ride. If it is cheap enough, scoop it.

Great fun bike, I had one for a number of years. They do suffer from some issues though.

Instead of an alternator they run a Stator Coil & Reg/Rec electrical system which usually gives problems as the stator cooks itself.

Starter seal leaks allowing oil into the starter motor.

Like all the Yamahas of this age the fuel outlet port was above the the lowest point in the tank, this combined with a leaky fuel cap means rust in the lowr corners.

The bolts holding the starter clutch to the flywheel work loose.

I had all the common issues on mine but there is plenty of info out there and a good forum as well with many helpful people like here. I wish I still had the bike.

I got to part one out last year. Best I can tell everything above is correct. Also it has an external yics on it. It is mounted on the right hand side. Is it an 82 or 83. Yamaha worked out some of the bugs in the 83 model. Good running critter when it is running correctly though.

I forgot about the external YICs container, they leaked also, I split mine down the centre and rebuilt with a gasket.

Its an '82 and it seems to run well. Needs a headlight bucket and a lot of cleaning up. I made an offer and am waiting to here if I get it or not.
