I recently finished swapping wheels/brakes/and front suspension from a seca turbo on to my '82 xj650 maxim. Now i have less of a stagger in wheel sizes.. Its 19/18 instead of 19/16. I'm also running a much taller tire in the rear which has been like adding another gear. It has been great, I am now getting a little over 40 mpg instead of high/mid 30's.

I used the tires sizes recommended from a seca turbo website, trying to fit the fattest tires on as possible. The front turned out nice, but the rear could be a little fatter. Overall i'm very happy with how it turned out. For the most part it was a direct swap. I had to get a drum assembly from the turbo bike, as the wheel uses a much larger brake drum than the maxim.

Anyway, here it is. Not a very pretty bike, but I like it and it gets me where I need to go. I've been riding it to school and work everyday since gas prices have gotten so out of control.. I just rolled 40k on it. Probably 5k of that has been by me in the past few months.

Have you noticed any handling quirks? As some have said this changes your fork geometry, making steering "quick".
And not to be critical or anything, but the 70's seat needs to go.
    I know--it's a work in progress!

The steering seems a little heavier at low speed, but it's not bad.

lol it's all i've been able to scronge up. I hated the stock maxim seat, so i took it off for that honda cb seat that was in my shed. I can't seem to find anything else that would look decent on it though.

    What sizes were they?

What parts did you need to source beyond the rim? Brake pads? Pad backing plate? Actuator shaft?
I've got the same setup for my 81 Max 650 and would like to know what all I will need to get before I swap in the parts.

Bike looks very good, nicely done.

Funny how you can take something that looks mediocre in one application, but great in another. I never cared for these wheels on the Turbo, but they look great on your Maxim!
You have truly inspired me...I am off to tag a beard on the Mona Lisa!

Are those Maxim forks or Seca ones?

everything from the triple tree forward is seca, i.e. forks, wheel, calipers, master cylinder and lines, rotors etc.

on the rear you can re-use the axle shaft. You just need the rim and drum assembly. The wheel splines are the same so it slides right on. Bike stops a lot better now, but I think it could be improved more with with some stainless steel lines.

I didn't dig the wheels a whole lot when i first got them, but they are growing on me.. Kinda 80'stastic haha I think they are a big improvement over the swirly 16/19's.

As far as tire size, I did 110/90/19 up front and 130/90/18 in the rear.

    Anyone have any seat suggestions??
