Check your safety switches for sticking and or short circuits!

I'd check the Sidestand switch first. Those buggers like to hang-up and cause the engine to shut right down when you select a gear.

Flush the switch out with electronic parts cleaner and make sure the mechanical linkage is free to go its whole travel.

Hey all! I've got a '83 xj750mk midnight maxim, needs allot of work, but hey, it was free!! I rebuilt the carbs and it runs sweet now. But when i go to put it in gear it dies. Ive heard that could be because of the kickstand switch???? I've cleaned out all the wire connections thinking it might be a bad sensor connection(bike sat for 3 years in the rain before i got ahold of it), but it still does it. Any feedback would be very helpfull.

RickCoMatic, I actually saw the sidestand switch thing from you on a reply to another member. I'm going to try it tomorrow. Any other helpfull hints?? I don't know what the switch on the handlebars for the clutch is for but it is broke and i havn't got the chance to order the new part for it yet. Could that be anything to do with it? What is that for??? And do you know of any good sites for parts for the Whole bike?? I had to order a main jet and couldn't find one out here(broke when i tryed to put it in), and that was a pain in the ass!!!!! any info would help. Thanks.

If the Clutch Lever Safety Switch is broken ... it could be frozen CLOSED sending a signal to the Safety relay that the CLUTCH LEVER isn't being pulled and thereby shutting down the plant.

Follow the wires from where the barrel of the Switch fit into the Clutch Perch and trace them back to where they plug-in.
You'll probably have to take-out the Headlight and dig around in the nest of wires to locate the Bullet ends of that switch where it Plugs-into the harness.

Before you undo them ... take a reading on them with your test light and the Ignition Switch both ON and Off.

If you find 12V Hot to the striped wire ... pull the Clutch Lever and see if it goes out.

    Yes. Switch is OK
NO. Switch is frozen closed and is disabling the bike.

Unplug the Striped wire and the Bike should start!
