The blinkers on my 1982 XJ650 Maxim self-cancel after 12 flashes. I would prefer they stay on longer than that, maybe 20 flashes. Failing this, is there any easy way to disable the self-cancellation alltogether?

    Thanks a bunch.

It's distance based, something pretty short too. It counts revolutions of the speedometer cable. You'd need to trick the counter. You could also disconnect the lead to the speedometer and cancel manually.

Of course if you slow down it'll stay on longer

If I'm in a high speed situation where it's more than a lane change I'm in the habit of hitting it again. Pushing the button seems to reset the counter.

I'll have to do a bit more experimenting, but I'm pretty sure that as long as I'm above 10 or 15 mph, it's always 12 flashes. If I'm stopped or very slow, it stays on.

If you're right, it should be pretty easy to disable it.

Does anyone have a portion of the wiring diagram online that shows the circuit for the blinkers?

    Thanks again.

All you have to do is get a flasher from an auto parts store, 2 prong.
You lose the self cancel feature. This is how some people are dealing with aftermarket lights, that don't flash.
I would try to keep the self cancel feature.

12 flashes isn't enough? What are you signalinG? That you are doing doughnuts in the wal-mart parking lot? Why in gods name would you need more than 12 flashes, grandpa??

When I'm driving down the highway at 65 with cars/trucks, etc. following me, I'd like to give them more than a cursory wink that I am slowing down to turn.

In short: no, 12 flashes isn't enough.

You can unplug the self-canceller from the main harness and the flashers can still be operated in a totally manual mode.

The factory wire diagrams show the canceller, of course, but give you no clue as to how it works internally, but we know that it takes the distance measurement off of a reed switch on the back of the speedo, such reed switch being operated by the speedo cable from the front wheel. The time measaurement is probably handled by simple electronic "clock" chip inside the self-canceller relay.

But it does say that it is based on a combination of time and distance....I believe the distance is 150 feet, and the time is 10 seconds. BOTH criteria have to be met before the self-cancellation occurs.

So if you're sitting at a stoplight, waiting for a turn signal or opportunity to turn, the 10-second criteria will be met easily and then you'll have to travel 150 feet down the road before it self-cancels.

On the other hand, if your zipping down the freeway at 60 mph, the 150-foot threshold will be met in about 2 seconds.....and your canceller will continue flashing for about another 8 seconds before self-cancelling.

I'll double-check my manual on that one. I know it says something about it.

Well, I looked it up. 10 seconds or 490 feet, which ever is longer. If it isn't statying along as long as you like, I don't know how you could adjust it. I usually signal early and then if I am pulling up to a red light, I hit the signal again to reset it just to make sure it stays on.

Maybe get another cancel unit- - see above- - check that you have a cancel unit. It's the 2 inch long relay box.

    And Welcome !!

I see you figured it out.

According to my factory book, your canceling unit should be located on the LH frame "backbone" tube just forward/above the rear gas tank attachment point. It's the large, oblong one; the smaller, square relay on the same bracket is the safety relay.

The flasher itself is located between the frame tubes just below the coils.

It may sound silly but do you have a stock speedo?
Mine weren't canceling, then I realized I had taken the speedo cable off to replace.
