Speedo broke on the way to work this morning...now a buzzing sound is coming from the engine...not terribly loud, but noticable. I figure it is the gear that runs the speedo that is buzzing. Will the bike be OK to drive 40 miles to get home?

The buzzing is probably the sound of a broken cable. Pull the cable out of the head and pull the pieces.
The other probability is your speedo froze up and the cable is being chewed by the drive gear. Second verse same as the first, pull the cable.
That will get you home without further damage. Next step is to replace the cable with a good used unit or buy one. Chacal is our site parts guy, give him as shout if you have questions.

AWESOME advice. I just wanted to make sure the drive gear in the engine was not the buzzing sound as it's chewed into tiny pieces and thrown all over the interior of the engine.

The cable SHOULD go to the front axle, not the engine.

Point taken Ass.Fault, I was daydreaming it seems. Yes, the front axle would be the residence for the Speedo cable, not the front of the head where the tach cable lives. I gotta take up drinking coffee or something, I'm really starting to miss things...
So there you have it sgknies, you have company in the less smart people section! Less smart can be cured however, that is what education is all about (that and paying attention as I have so ably demonstrated).

Heh...sad thing is I didn't even catch that you mistakenly used the word head (pertaining to the engine) and was giving you an authentic compliment. Just shows that even I missed the slip.
