Wellll... You could just pull the bulb...
You didn't give too many specifics on the type of bike you are dealing with do I cannot even suggest a fix. What year, type and model are you dealing with? I'll lay odds you will have to go into the mechanisim and re-adjust the sensor pickup.

I'll see if I can't locate your specs on my XJCD at home. I'll be in touch.
As for messing with something, we don't learn unless we explore. Just be advised, are you willing to live with the consequences of buggering up the meter? If so, no worries. If not, don't futz with it.
Personally, I would source an additional unit and have a known good unit standing by in case I dorked up my spare. Then I'm not down hard while I'm looking for a replacement.

OK, you have my full attention on this one. What is a speed warning light, and what bikes have them? Never heard of this and will probably never see one lit, as I am not likely to ever go fast enough.

Good thing they didn't install them in your Corvairs or they'd always be lit! I mean... Ralph Nader was never wrong, was he?

Ol' Ralphy was (is) a piece of work. Never had a drivers license and was a car expert. We (the Corvair Society of America) actually invited him to speak at one of our conventions many years ago. It went pretty well and was all done in good humor but he never changed his mind regardless of the facts. One of mine is the factory turbo and I've never topped it out - as I approach 90 MPH I remember who assembled the car - ME - and I back off. Pretty much the same attitude when I'm on the bike.

Nor have I but I'm not an expert on what was optional equipment on XJs in other markets so I'm open to looking at it. Can't hurt and might be an interesting "factory" option.

In Japan the national speed limit was 50 - - FIFTY ! I don't know during what years, but we had 55 for way too long.

(he said he had a Japanese import, and a 85 kph warning would keep you pretty safe at 52 MPH)
