Has anyone seen a prebuilt hardtail section that canbe welded or bolted to the rear of an XJ?

I've seen tons of these for XS 650's... Actually there seems to be a lot of XS 650's out there that have been chopped or bobbed...

Just wondering why there aren't really a whole lot of these types of customs done to Xjs...

    Your thoughts...

I have a vulcan 750 that some clown turned into a hardtail ... by replacing the rear shock with a steel rod ...
    Cool.

I had seen that done - Actually made up some struts and tried it myself. Just thought it looked dopey...

I am looking for a true hardtail section - That I could cut the back half of my frame off and weld into place... Guess I may just have to make my own.

I saw a pic (maybe here, in another thread) of an XJ where the passenger footpeg mount was used for the strut to lower the bike and make it a hardtail. It was the right length, and looked cool and professional, if you really WANT a hardtail.....

I think people chop the XS650's more because it's a parrallel twin (like the old BSA's, Norton's, and Triumph's), and it's chain drive, so it's generally easier to work with. Doubt you'll find anything for the XJ, it's probably going to have to be custom.

Shoot, just realized you're running the 550!! So you have a chain drive too. Hmmmm... :D

Wonder how close the XS650 rear section would be to yours. That might actually work. I've got an XS650 special that I need to pick up and get to the shop, but when I get it here, I'll take some measurements, and you can measure yours and we'll see if it'll work.

BTW, how did you like the ride with your strutted rear end? We're planning on chopping my friend's XJ650 Seca frame, and it'll be a custom hardtail rear section.

don't know of any pre-built stuff...

but they can sure be fabbed! Here's the one I just picked up in a trade. I picked it up from WebHeadJames who has posted this here before, I believe.

I really liked the lines and it makes me giggle to think about the prospect of people scratching their heads as they look at an inline 4 shaft drive hardtail

You won't meet many like it coming at you from the other way on a rig like this!

Awesome man, be sure to keep us updated on this project!! The previous owner made a post a few weeks back with some pictures of it. Should be a nice bike when it's all done! :D

The ride wasn't too bad - These maxims have a pretty cushy seat on them.

I have found a guy that will hardtail my frame for $350 - Still haven't decided if I want to sink the money into this bike or sell it and do something else...

    Wanted to ressurect this thread

#1) to ask dutch if he has any updated pics of this bike. I searched and found nothing.

#2) I saw this and thought it could probably be modified for an XJ frame. Remove the vertical post and mate it to the short top tube. You could either trim the bottom tubes of the hardtail and weld it to the frame where the rear pegs attach or cut the bottom tubes of the frame and attach it further forward (better). I bet it would fit with a little work.
