    What's the trick?

I mounted a tire on a rim after much sweating and swearing but can't get the bead to seat fully. Figured maybe I didn't have enough pressure in my puny home compressor so I took it to a tire place and they couldn't get it inflated either. Tried a ratcheting tie-down strap but still can't get it!

    Any suggestions?

Oh yeah... I would prefer to do without the use of combustibles if possible. Thanks!

Last time me and a buddy mounted a tire ourselves we coated the rim with soapy water to help it slip in the bead easily when it was pressurized

    My 2 Cents

I use soapy water and a ratcheting tie down, no problems.
Use a spray bottle to get the solution evenly around the tire bead.

when I mounted my tires I also used a thin amount of soapyness spread evenly I also pushed down so the bottom was mostly on then when hitting the pressure squeezed and lifted. Make sure you listen and hear both POP's from both beads sealing. Then either with two lawn chairs(as I did) or making two even height stands and your axle give the wheel a slow spin(very slow) mark the top of the tire with chaulk. so this 4-7 times if you always have the same spot up top directly across from that is your heavy spot where you need to ad wieght. This is time consuming but you can get the wheel pretty well balanced. The goal is to get a totally random spot every time the wheel stops this means you essentially don't have a heavy spot or heavy enough to throw things out at speed.

Done! And I have to say that it was not easy! I let a little dish detergent run down around the bead where it wasn't seating and then inflated the crap out of the tire. Pop, pop, pop... Success!! Except for about 8 inches worth of bead on one side. Okay... A little more air? Didn't want to blow the thing off the rim so I tried bouncing the wheel on the unseated part for a while. Nothing... Got the tie-down back on there and cranked it down. Inflated again like crazy. Still nothing... Finally deflated it completely and pushed the bead down around where it was sticking the let the soap get in there and lube it up good, reinflated with tie-down in place and somewhere around ~80psi the bead popped into place! Hurrah!

    Now for the balancing...
